There’s still a classist view on the bus in Chicago. Which is a shame because buses go to places where there are no trains
Cities become so much better when we make the bus suck less; there are still many, many ways we can make the bus suck less; and as a whole we should be trying to make the things we already know how to do suck less instead of waiting/wishing/hoping for vaporware tech to save the day.
One thing I wrote about here is how technology has made buses *way* more convenient while techno-futurists were obsessed with flying taxis and self-driving cars.

5 million-plus kindergartners now live in counties where schools don’t have “herd immunity” for measles, Washington Post reporters found.

WaPo also built a tool to look up your own county.

Exceptional, and alarming work by @laurenweberhp.bsky.social @caitlingilbert.bsky.social et al.

U.S. vaccination rates are plunging. Look up where your school stands.
Take a look to see what the kindergarten measles vaccination rates are in your area.

USPS quietly changed its postmark rules — mail is no longer dated when you drop it off. The “official” date is when it hits automated sorting — sometimes days later

Which could have major implications for mail in voting — it’s a clever way to disenfranchise voters that’s going largely overlooked

It turns out vehicular traffic does something else, too, more subtle but equally pernicious: It changes the way children see and experience the world by diminishing their connection to community and neighbors.

A once-in-a-generation investment that benefits everyone in our state.

Today, I’m proud to sign the Northern Illinois Transit Authority Act into law.

Our new regional authority will modernize Illinois’ transit systems — and we’re doing it with no new statewide taxes.

Got a wedding invitation a few years ago that literally said, in print, "there is street parking at the venue. This isn't Chicago, we live in a civilization" - husband and i were stunned into silence. What absolutely unnecessary nonsense.
We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

Chicagoans have demanded new leadership at the CTA for years.

Now, there's an opportunity to select an experienced and visionary leader to take on major challenges.

A transparent, thorough national search should be conducted to attract and consider the best possible candidates.
