Good Friday: the Messiah is dead

Black Friday: capitalism is alive

TGI Fridays: high chance of bowling or cinema nearby

Man Friday: there’s only two of us on this island and you’re a racist

Quite peculiar beer - does taste like sour raspberry waffles in liquid form. Whether that is desirable is up for debate.

Lovely little (6-post) thread...
We thought my paternal grandmother's oatmeal cookie recipe was lost when she died. There was a recipe card in the card box but it didn't make the cookies we all remembered.
I’m sorry to be depressing but if there is a dish you ate today that someone you love made and you can’t imagine a world where you stop getting to have that every year

Get the fucking recipe 😭

There's an issue with the software I'm trying to upgrade and I've been back and forth with support to get it sorted. Today they say "developers report that this is a known issue with this upgrade, you need to install the service pack". Do they give me the service pack or a link? No they do not.

Fancy new oven has arrived! Not being fitted until Monday though. Helpfully they have provided a graphic on the top to suggest no-one climbs on top of it before then.

In this era of American Retreat, Canada must return to working with Australia and Germany to make the weirdest science fiction shows on Earth.

Respectively: Farscape and Lexx, for anyone unaware.
I think if Canada wants to have a strong cultural identity we need to go back to doing what we're best at, making the weirdest fucking TV shows you've ever seen

In 1924, Calvin Coolidge's 16-yr-old son played tennis on the White House grounds w/o wearing socks. He got a blister and was dead from infection a week later.

This is unthinkable today—which is why I wrote this series. Cuz the systems that save us from this kind of fate are in urgent need of care.
For a yr, I've been working on a series for The New Atlantis about the vast systems that underlie our lives. Our ancestors built them up over decades to fend off hunger, thirst, darkness and disease. But too few of us know about them—and they're all at risk. The conclusion is now available online:
Why We Are Better Off Than a Century Ago
Our ancestors built grand public systems to conquer hunger, thirst, darkness, and squalor. That progress can be lost if we forget it.

Oh dear, oven went pop yesterday, main element has gone. Grill still works. So we looked at the cost of fixing it and then decided we would instead get the nice oven we've been eyeing up since we bought this house. Paid today, oven arrives Friday, being fitted Monday. Time to review meal plans!
