GIVE FOLKS CASH

A lot of people panhandling use that money to get hotels or hostel beds. Give someone a $20 and they are well on their way to getting the amount they need to get inside for the night.
Lots of attention on the snow forecast, but let's not ignore the COLD that follows

Wind chills in the SINGLE DIGITS by Sunday evening. Coldest weather of the season so far!

How, I really do wonder, do you "do science" without actually reading the existing scholarship? What has really struck me since the gAI boom is how many people have such a profound contempt for the act of reading--or at the least seem not to understand that reading is thinking.

This column on Vox is the biggest pile of steaming AI crap I've seen this year. Human's aren't running out of ideas. Instead, those with power and money don't want to listen to ideas that threaten their power and money.

Ideas are plentiful. Putting those ideas into action is the hard part.
We’re running out of good ideas. AI might be how we find new ones.
What if the best use of AI is restarting the world’s idea machine?

I once made a tweet about Your Woman and how wild it is it samples a song now over a century old, and the person behind White Town found it and wrote a very appreciative reply, and I’m remembering this because I’m currently listening to Your Woman, which still slaps

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.

After an economic crash you always see headlines like What Was Everyone Thinking? What do you mean everyone, most of us are waving our arms and screaming every day, it's a handful of insanely rich assholes who aren't listening

It is genuinely incredible to me how much evidence there is to support investing in the public good and how much animus there is to do this simple, effective thing.

ICE agents in Chicago violently detain a non verbal autistic man for being “non compliant”

He couldn’t “comply” because of his disability…they don’t care

This is not the first time they’ve gone after a disabled person

They target the most vulnerable because it’s an easy way to meet their quota

They pick on the weak.

They pick on the vulnerable.

They want it to look like an intimidating show of force.

There’s also something more nefarious behind it…. Which is that they’re counting on society to not care if a disabled person gets *more* disabled.

We need you to care.
“I think they wanted to make a point,” said Quinn Haberl, who is 4-foot-6 and legally blind. “So they picked the weakest person they could find and made a big show out of it.”

I’ve used GPTs at my job that are supposedly designed for specific tasks I regularly perform, some of which are quite tedious. Not once have they saved me time. Instead of composing something that’s relatively easy to do from scratch, I spend twice the time cleaning up inconsistent, wordy nonsense.
There are basically only two positions in the debate about AI.
1. I’ve barely invested any time in learning how to use it effectively. AI sucks.
2. I’ve invested in learning how to use this tool. Holy cow, it’s transformational.

Position #1 has lower barriers to entry.

Administrators at Indiana University baselessly fired the student media director and ordered the student paper to cease its print edition, so it'd sure be a shame if this excellent digital front page were to be widely shared today
