If I'm correct it's because Democratic electeds and consultants want to win by default, that is reach a political equilibrium in which the GOP are seen as too extreme to govern, and a plurality of voters have no choice but to elect Democrats. This results in sliding right and taking the temperature.

If you're wondering why elected Democrats aren't protesting the latest egregious and criminal thing the Republicans are doing, it's because they think they'll be rewarded at the polls simply for not being the ones who did it, and not having to commit to anything other than that.

What's great about this Dem Senate capitulation is that if they reach a deal, and Republicans in the House go along with it, but House Dems hold the line, guess which way the narrative goes on blame? You guessed it, away from Trump. A masterclass.

This is a lovely sentiment but Schumer isn't up for re-election until 2028 and he knows this. At which point he will be 77/78. There's no mechanism to recall a sitting senator AFAIK.

I will say, I don't know what a plausible *good* outcome was -- the GOP wasn't going to sign off on good bills just because of some bad polls, I don't think online progs or Schumer/Jeffries had a clear plan to win this either?
