I’ve always chocked it up to noble-savage racism too. I think he has empathy for Native Americans not because they are victims of atrocities, but rather in the way one has empathy for a blue whale or bengal tiger.

It’s actually kind of impressive that Avatar continues to be a huge cinematic franchise with ads and articles and featurettea and hype despite absolutely no one giving one half shit about it for 20 years. The best thing in the Avatar universe is the Ryan Gosling SNL sketch.
