There is plenty of racism and authoritarianism in American history, no doubt, but what Trump is doing is unique. We've never had a strongman like this, who corrupts the entire government into a personal instrument and gives his supporters permission to commit libidinal violence in his name.

but other Americans waved that same flag marching into battle against their own former slaveowners

The Trumpists have no coherent idea of how to consolidate autocratic rule other than to lash out wherever they can. Confronted with hardening resistance, the only option they are left with, within the narrow universe of pathways MAGA is willing to consider, is to escalate.

Judging from the reactions to the piece, the idea that protests and public opinion are meaningless in the face of a paramilitary occupation, that authoritarian regimes don’t need to care about popular support, is still widespread.

But it is wrong. And it perpetuates regime propaganda.

The idea that there are no protests in the US and no one is standing up to Trump is proving incredibly hard to kill over here in Germany. It’s become dogma, utterly detached from empirical reality.

I wonder if the people who keep talking like that understand they’re perpetuating regime propaganda.

I grew up hearing stories from my father about how folks abducted by Franco’s secret police would routinely “escape” to the roof of police HQ and “commit suicide.” The obviousness of the lie was itself an intimidation tactic.
"agents told hospital staff that Castaneda Mondragon ... 'purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.'”
A Minnesota man received a life-threatening injury while in ICE custody. It's not clear how he got injured because his memory and ability to communicate are so severely impaired. Agents said "he got his shit rocked." Wild story from @katrinapross.bsky.social sahanjournal.com/health/ice-d...

We’re not far enough away from this last decade to write pithy little postscripts about it, but if I had to summarize why it all happened, it’s that the people who could have stopped it confused decorum for virtue.
not enough people are rude to blatant liars like Jennings to their face and in public.

authoritarian regimes are actually more sensitive to public opinion than democratic ones because they do not have a reliable mechanism to reset their legitimacy (ie actual elections)!
How is it that so many people think that authoritarianism is a way to bypass completely public opinion?

I mean, here we have a feel-good story of ordinary defiance. Pushing back against hate. But you, the reader, may know (as I did not) who Mark Harris is and that his husband is in fact legendary American dramatist Tony Kushner. This would be like if Saul Bellow or Joan Didion told you to get fucked.
My husband was on the 2 train and a guy started braying about how Renee Good deserved to die and her "lesbian lover" did too. My husband got pissed and said, "You're absolutely disgusting." "Fuck you!" the guy said. "Fuck YOU!" my husband said. The guy left.

See? We just need to talk to each other.

the national guard is not a free anti-federal government win button. in fact it is an Insurrection Act and/or civil war button. if you press that button you better know what comes next. that would be not just the national guard or ICE or FBI, but the actual military, authorized to kill.

to change the constitution, you need control of one of the major political parties, at minimum.
