Alan Solem, renowned snail expert & curator at the Field Museum was describing a new snail from the rural province of Ba in Fiji.

It required a new genus, so he used 'Ba'.

That was too tempting for him to resist, so allow me to introduce the Ba humbugi snail.

When this teaser for Predator: Badlands first came out, I thought it was a bit silly that The Hu were singing "Wolf Totem" in the background. It's not set in Mongolia!

Having watched the movie, I now see that this was brilliant musical foreshadowing.

Extremely bad news if true (and unlikely this reporter would run with it if not). The MMWR has been the earliest warning bell for outbreaks since it announced the first US cases, in 1981, of what was later identified as AIDS.

This will be a grievous shock to what remains of US public health.
BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

EXTREMELY COOL BAT STUFF: A study out in Science today found that the greater noctule bat, Europe's largest, hunts and catches *migrating birds* while in flight. In at least one case, a bat climbed to more than 1200 feet, then chased a robin downward FAST until it caught it near the ground.
Greater noctule bats prey on and consume passerines in flight
Despite billions of passerines seasonally migrating during the night at high altitudes, only three bat species have been found to consistently tap into this rich prey resource. However, it remains unk...

Also true from a climate perspective- every ton of CO2 not released into the atmosphere measurably, quantifiably helps. People seem to wrongly think there’s some threshold that if it gets so bad it doesn’t matter if it gets worse and that’s not what the science says!
