I earn under £40k but don't feel poor. I'm not going to listen to the podcast but I bet most of these people's cashflow problems could be solved by taking their kids out of private school, selling a couple of cars, and doing one less ski holiday a year

1960s newspapers with ºF look odd in a way their use of miles doesn't. Measures like feet for height are fading today but sometimes heard. I have recipes my mum wrote in the 00s with lb/oz. My dad sometimes discusses rain in inches. But I struggle to recall an older Kiwi/Aussie EVER lapsing into ºF

Also, you can tell Celsius is superior to Fahrenheit and the Seppo "human scale" claims really mean "it's wot I know" because ºF has vanished from Aus/NZ to a degree beyond other archaic pre-metric measures. The recency of metrication of temperature comes as a shock when I tell a lot of students

This is basically how Australia's Bureau of Meteorology explained Celsius to the public at metrication in 1972 too!

Its PR officer came up with jingles about frosty fives, tingling tens, temperate twenties, thirsty thirties, and flaming forties

(frosty fives was -5 to 5, tingling tens 5–15, etc)
Negative: freezing!
0 to 10: Cold!
10 to 20: Mild!
20 to 30: Pleasant!
Above 30: hot!

The American mind cannot comprehend this.
Celsius is the scientist temperature measurement in that it’s the most conceptually coherent , Fahrenheit is the engineer temperature measurement in that it’s actually optimized to be useful for it’s main use case of communicating everyday temperatures.

WTF does that even mean?
What value does it offer.
Where’s the jobs in this? Where’s lowering costs for Australians?
Where’s the home building? School building improvement?
Addressing climate crisis?

Spam callers buy blocks of hundreds if not thousands of numbers and the Government says it can’t do anything about it… What is the purpose of the ID Laws?

Who is selling these numbers?
