I've said before that the core storyline of film noir is "an amoral person meets an immoral person and must, reluctantly, make a moral choice."

Here's a mind-twister for some people. Noir is optimistic. I'm serious. Doomed protagonists, horrible options, bad choices, devastating consequences. All that and they keep going. Yeah, they're horrible people. They do horrible things. But in spite of all evidence they still think they can succeed.

I very much want to emphasize that prior to watching this show, I did not have much in the way of an opinion about Mr Beast beyond "he has dead eyes" and "his Youtube videos are a troubling indictment of society." Now, having watched this show, I hate him on a deeply visceral, Kissingerian level.
