Birthday dinner for me and @hatfield.bsky.social: patatas bravas, manchego (ate those too quickly for pictures), titaina del cabanyal (sort of a tomato pesto with tuna) and for a main, paella Valenciana, the "original" paella from the region that invented it, with chicken and rabbit rather than fish

Valencia is an incredibly pretty city at night, I must say

The Turia Gardens are fantastic - the city was originally going to turn a dry riverbed into a motorway, but Valencians said "fuck that, we want it to be a park" so now it's a 9km long park that runs through downtown, green and delightful and alive

There's a ChatGPT ad about a family farm where the owner says her family has been doing this for a hundred years and she doesn't want to be the one to screw it up and that's why she's getting advice from ChatGPT and, my God, can you people hear yourselves?

We're only in Valencia for a day and a half (already clear that's not enough but knew that already) but one of the reasons I wanted to be here on my birthday was to visit the City of Arts and Sciences, which you may recognize from a teevee show from long long ago set in a galaxy far far away

For my fellow transit nerds: just look at Valencia's central train station

I'm hardly the first person to note this, but it's enormously instructive that our President and his followers saw the message "THE ONLY THING MORE POWERFUL THAN HATE IS LOVE" and understood it, correctly, as an attack on them
What a moment.

So is there another Matt Damon NFT ad this year or what? I want to know more about how they're going to change everything and how that's going

the thing i'm waiting for with the ai romance novel lady is for another scammer to figure out that purely ai-generated material w no human authorship is generally not considered to be protected by copyright in the US rn, and saving themselves the 45 mins per book by reselling hers

I had my second colonoscopy a couple months ago. They fiynd and removed a bunch of precancerous cysts. That doesn't necessarily mean they would have become cancerous, but now I don't have to worry about the colon for a couple years. Which is good!
Reupping this because a colonoscopy is no big deal and anyone over 40 should be talking to their doctor about getting one.

Take care of yourselves, people.
The prep isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, the surgery is the best nap you'll ever have, and the first meal after is a religious experience.

Anyway, it's our last night in Barcelona, and I would love to return. The best parts are mostly not the touristy bits (honestly, they can and should double the tourist taxes), but just navigating a pleasant city where people-focused design is always present and where the attitude is good.

Something I particularly notice about Barcelona is the plethora of playgrounds and play spaces in the heart of downtown. It's a very deliberate choice. Would never happen in Toronto.

as always, people who have actually discovered an incredible productivity hack will simply use that productivity hack themselves, not sell their techniques to the masses in one-off classes
Oh she’s a scam artist, got it! Every single time you hear about a person offering coaching in one of these pieces they’re just a scammer and the media falls for it

This is what Hess said: “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the US right now. I think it’s a little hard. There’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of. Just because I wear the flag doesn't mean I represent everything that's going on in the US.”

Japan is a typical, developed democracy. Elections take place in an environment where the general public have a range of political parties to choose from, operating in a pluralistic media landscape, with totally free, secret ballots, after which the LDP win.

The music museum in Barcelona is cheap, undervisited and absolutely top tier. Here, have a reminder that dorky guitar nerds have existed about as long as the guitar has
