THE LEPER IN THE CITY

UK politics live – latest updates
Decades-old racism is returning to British politics, and “it makes people feel very scared” Keir Starmer has said, warning that divisive hard-right politics was “tearing our country apart”.
Speaking to GP and TV personality Amir Khan, the prime minister accused Nigel Farage’s Reform UK of overseeing a return of the racist and divisive politics “that frankly I thought we had dealt with decades ago”. Continue reading...

I think it's in incredibly poor taste to suggest that only Brianna Ghey's loved ones c/should have any insights worthy of listening to regarding her murder, as opposed to the many transgender people in the UK who continue to experience the transphobic prejudice and violence that led to her murder.
Do you not think it's bizarre to have strangers on the internet decide they know better than Brianna's own loved ones on what is or isn't insulting to her memory?
I've got no time for Rosie Duffield, but she turned up at a drop-in event in Parliament and that's been the limit of her involvement.

There is a (in my view, deliberate) overemphasis of Hannah Arendt’s remarks about the ‘banality of evil’ and regular people doing evil things versus a more urgent point she makes about the farce of trying to locate the evils of the Final Solution in the body of one man because Nazism was structural.
I sometimes worry about this fascination with how apparently normal people can do things of extreme cruelty - I guess it’s good because it makes us more vigilant, I just worry about being bewitched by the charm of the monster www.theguardian.com/film/2025/no...

Fwiw, as an American I tried when I saw fascism rising in our country to read more of the BBC because I thought them being based in another country and public supported would make their coverage different.
Nope! Just as bad as any American outlet.

The basic thing for me is that I got to where I am by avoiding the BBC and other mainstream news outlets like the plague and instead consuming independent news media and commentary I actually feel like I can trust. Everything I know and understand, I do in spite of the BBC, not because of it.

Personally I'd be pleased to see BBC News disappear entirely. To argue, as many do, that British politics or our news environment would be so much worse without the BBC you have to explain why British politics and news environment is so very bad with the BBC.

I wonder if this immediate surrender has anything to do with the Labour Party’s position of total obsequiousness to the Trump administration and whether this sorry state of affairs might be a teaching moment about the actual political function of a ‘national broadcaster’ such as the BBC

anyway if dems think I'm gonna forget this shit in 5 months, they're wrong. if they think I'm gonna forget it in 5 years, they're wrong. they have fully convinced me that purging the party of these inept losers in the senate is more important than retaking the senate in the next election cycle

As a longtime hater of the BBC, it's so gratifying to watch it be devoured by the termites it welcomed in through the front door in order to prove a worthless point to anyone who actually believed in its mission

Sources say Robbie Gibb amplified criticisms of Trump, Gaza and trans rights coverage, and had ‘a lot of oxygen in the room’

America has a substantial white Christian Evangelical population and activating them politically was a 40+ year project. These guys think they’re gonna make Christian Nationalism work here when the population is secularising and most devout Christians are among the immigrant groups they despise.
A strange post from the Ukip leader, pictured at the Aldershot memorial, but seeming to want people to believe/imagine it was the Cenotaph

"Yes, we stabbed you all in the back in a way that will probably ruin thousands of lives, but the important thing is you all get back behind us so we can really make the next showdown count."
The sooner we get past internal recriminations and back to fighting united, the better off we all are — the likelier our victory next November.

V good - as Tom points out, much of living in the UK today is built around either believing, or tolerating, being lied to directly to your face. Pointing out the lie will get you yelled at, castigated and publicly shamed, and underneath it all, a fear of what happens once the lie unravels
