A simple answer to this, anecdotally speaking, is that people in general want nice things, but they don't want other people to have access to said nice thing and the latter will almost certainly overshadow the former
Just generally my default assumption upon learning that something new is gonna happen in Britain is that it'll be a little bit crap. I don't think that's inevitable or something, I don't get that impression in other countries, especially not ones as wealthy as the UK. Things here just always rubbish

It's sort of interesting to me that for a lot of British journalists, "success" largely means reducing people's access to essential services

There should be more funding in education against transphobic bullying and trans safe spaces in schools in Brianna’s name. But with slow push to bring back section 28 they stuck the response to her murder onto a school policy they had planned already

V good - as Tom points out, much of living in the UK today is built around either believing, or tolerating, being lied to directly to your face. Pointing out the lie will get you yelled at, castigated and publicly shamed, and underneath it all, a fear of what happens once the lie unravels
Hi guys, I've decided as everyone else has to start a substack. Here's my first article, on how the Maccabi Tel Aviv fan furore lays bare the pretence at the heart of British politics. Feel free to subscribe, I'm going to try write at least 2 articles a month.

I hate landfill indie as much as anyone else but even I think it’s a bit much for The Maccabees to be banned playing in Birmingham

Sure, though for the past 3 decades (?) the idea of a national culture has p much been undermined by successive governments : cuts to arts funding, walling off access to creative industries to the richest in society, making the UK incredibly difficult to be a creative worker etc.
I reckon a shared national popular culture is just as important (if not more important) than a fact based, impartial news service for liberal democracy to work.

“New York Times conducts hostile interview with children’s education influencer questioning her recognition of comprehensively documented war crimes” is not a sentence I could have imagined a few years ago

Are we getting close to noticing yet
Maybe Keir should demand the heads of major US news networks any time they imply Britain is on the brink of civil war or that we live under sharia law. Or does it not work both ways?

genuinely concerned that basically no one is talking about the new Now You See Me film, and also nobody seems to be hyped for the new Avatar coming out next month
November 10, 2025 at 11:35 AM
Not that this will be recognised or admitted to, but I do think a good way to understand this turn in the culture war is recognising the effects the EHRC definition of antisemitism and the way it was/is presented has had, and what it told people with power about how much they could get away with
Just incredible stuff all round really: all of these people had so much success brazenly lying to the public over the last ten years that there’s nothing now except lying and bullshit faked outrages over nothing. Almost every day of the year, it’s a new landslide of worthless rubbish.

I get it but also arguably not having to work, but having to perform working, probably made 'the workplace' worse. Either set up workplaces where everything can be done within a few hours, or let your staff also carry out japes and schemes

the wealthy oligarchs want to control all flow of information to create narratives and beliefs they want to instill into populations, no better illustrated by comparing how elon musks ‘grokipedia’ talks about hitler compared to ‘wikipedia’
