Trifecta of restoring democracy:
- End Citizen's United / enact stricter campaign finance laws so politicians cannot be bought.
- Implement STAR Voting so people can safely vote for who they want, including 3rd parties.
- Expand voting rights to all citizens, including everybody under 18 and felons.

I'm not having a "debate over puberty blockers".

My position is that kids deserve access to the standard endocrine care for the gender they wish to live the rest of their lives as, full fucking stop.

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

Yes, absolutely this is what America believes. Children are possessions, not people, and the overwhelming culture is one of actively enforcing the idea that children have no bodily autonomy whatsoever
The running theme between the Epstein story, banning trans healthcare for minors, religious homeschooling and the complaints about adult children estranging themselves is a fundamental American belief that children are property with no rights of their own
America is a culture of child abuse. Ask any survivor - we find one another, we form networks and communities.

The true scale of it would stagger and sicken you, and so it is buried, it is swept under the rug, it is denied and the survivors are silenced by whatever means are necessary.

The first step in fixing this, in my opinion, is voting rights, which would allow young people into the conversation on every other issue that affects them.
the oppression of children runs so deep in our society that one of the primary ways that we disempower people is by assigning them child-adjacent status as adults. license to abuse flows from that

all the fake AI trash really contradicts one of the main ways we're told capitalism operates, with capitalists identifying wants/needs & developing products & services to meet those. turns out you can skip that step & just pretend. nigh everyone hates AI and it makes no money but it's everywhere

Really gives the game away about all phone and internet bans for kids if all the other arguments hadn't already.
Former Obama speechwriter Sarah Hurwitz says Jewish students shouldn’t have smartphones until they finish high school — so they don’t see the “carnage” Israel and the U.S. have carried out in Gaza.

that whole 'this country isn't ready for a woman president' line is really upsetting because it shows exactly how neoliberalism works, redirecting blame from issues of policy (or lack thereof) onto a flattened, vague type of sexism in a way that ultimately doesn't even challenge sexism!

Raising children should be decentralized and community-driven. Parents should not have total control over the lives of their kids, especially when it comes to what they are allowed to learn about. More positive, trusted adult role models could intervene in situations of abuse/neglect

The recent policy change which makes it impossible for young trans people to delay puberty, at great cost to their mental health, has a special caveat to allow cross-sex hormones to be used on intersex children even contrary to their wishes, at great cost to their mental health.

There’s an issue where when someone makes a fact-based statement on social media, I’m more hesitant to like it because a like feels like a stamp of approval that the facts are correct, which takes effort to verify.

It's ridiculous that children don't get a say in who gets to raise them and make medical and financial decisions for them.
It's also ridiculous that only certain types of abuse and neglect are taken seriously, even if the child asks for help.

i think it's insane that if a child is subject to abuse, they *have* to wait it out until they're at a minimum 16 in most countries

i also think it's insane that, in most countries, child protective services are sincerely useless

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

i enjoyed one columnist’s “takedown” of ubi that said “why would anyone clean toilets?” and never quite got around to the thought that maybe cleaners would have to be valued more than they are to entice them to work, whereas columnists such as them could stand to take a pay cut to pay for that
There’s a pervasive (classist) view among people that someone working in the manual trades should never earn as much as an office worker. Which is why you get people aghast like “how can a tube driver earn more than me, a mid level marketing executive???”

As the person who ends up being responsible for treating the negative effects of drug use and worst outcomes from drugs, I endorse this skeet with my whole chest. Even if you are opposed to drug use, prohibition makes drugs less safe & doesn’t decrease drug use, so do you just want people to suffer?
We should allow people to use drugs just for the reason that many recreational drugs are fun and can be safely consumed
I wish these people would just admit they like doing drugs. Rick Perry tripping on hallucinogens for 12 hrs on a mattress in Tijuana for repressed childhood anxiety is not medical. It’s doing drugs. There’s no good evidence it has ever worked to treat any condition. They’re also trying to profiteer…

Parents will say “I’ll do anything for my kids” until that thing is making society better for them
One thing I feel like I fundamentally misunderstood is how many people see social progress as threatening, especially if it’s driven by young people.

I genuinely thought that they meant it when they said they wanted a better society for the next generation. And it’s so clear that isn’t really true.
