I don't know how you look at a graph like this and 1) chuckle at the "hard right" denomination (although this is the Economist so you couldn't expect less), then 2) see the correlation between conservative vote decline and far right rise and not investigate this further.

The thing about the right is that they never give up. The events we interpret as historical watersheds are temporary setbacks to them. Reconstruction, the German Revolution of 1918-19, the New Deal, the end of apartheid. All of those things were eventually avenged in spades.
