To put this in perspective, the entire growth of data center energy in the US in 2020-024, combined, is less than half the solar energy China deployed *last year alone.*

American energy policy is crippled by trying to keep petrochem relevant. It's embarrassing, it's ridiculous.
Clean Energy accounted for all electricity growth this year. Gas/Coal were basically a wash and will be for years to come for electricity generation.

We need to ramp up batteries because they are 90% cheaper than distribution grid upgrades which is the main reason we have rate increases.

this cellular automata rule makes beautiful run-on communal structures with large walled gardens which in turn contain finer walled structures. imagine the various spaces being put to use in different ways by people in this village.

Trying to measure coding productivity is, and always will be, a fool's errand.

Why? Because I can go for a walk then take a shower and have an idea, then write a single line of code that fixes everything I was working on.

Immense productivity, but by most metrics I didn't do anything at all.

Going into a fugue state due to the gas leak in my house and seeing the future were heat pumps and even traditional natural gas heaters are internationally banned as tools of Antifa and everyone is mandated to have a crypto mining heater in their house that runs 24/7 even during the summer.

The immense scale of the lateral moraine walls of the Tasman Glacier at Ball Hutt is hard to fathom. Sadly it also shows the roughly 400ft drop in the height of the glacier here over the past 60 or so years. These walls are incredibly unstable & a pig to scramble up.

Bjorklund's algorithm
stochastic substitution systems
cellular automata
hell, how about boids
Top five algorithms:

Mp3 encoding
FFT
Freaking N-dimensional convolution, truly based stuff
Runge-kutta 4th
Z-transform

Not sure i'd call any of them beautiful but there's some clever stuff going on
I'm right on board with this. There's tons of beautiful stuff to be done with algorithms that have nothing to do with LLM slop.

One of the things most quietly grieved amongst practitioners is the half-century of history and work in learning systems and technologies which have historically been categorized as “AI”, and they’ve all been run over by LLMs, and by the hype cycles the industry has *built* around LLMs. A huge loss.
There are quite a few ethical and justice oriented AI people who talk about having lifelong love for a vision of AI that is being trashed by the current thing, and I wonder if any of those positive visions have been articulated somewhere? What is it ppl think AI is supposed to be instead of this?
