An intimidating thing about being trans is deciding to take control of your own happiness

Most of the time, things happen at you and you take what you're given. Being trans involves taking control of and responsibility for your future

It's both the greatest gift in life and also sometimes scary
transness is a gift. i need every trans woman to understand that by nature of their existence they have been blessed with the ability to pluck the strands of fate with their hands if they choose to. it is not always easy and it is not without hardship but every trans woman is capable of greatness.

Part of the reason I think there isn’t as much pressure around stopping ChatGPT re: suicide/psychosis as compared to stuff like Panera Lemonade is because people are inclined to blame it on mental illness versus the tech, a kind of victim-blaming mentality that fits neatly into just world fallacy

Yet another instalment of "tech company just can't resist overtly supporting white supremacists, even if it is strategically a massive own goal"
The Framework forums thread got insanely unwieldy, so I wrote up a (somewhat shorter) summary post of the situation

Sometimes I think about how from 1935-1975ish, Bell Labs produced an insane amount of revolutionary science and technology, including 11 Nobel Prizes, the transistor, UNIX, C, the laser, the solar cell, information theory, etc. The secret? Provide scientists with ample, steady, no-strings funding.

when you become a boss you lose the right to chop it up with the employees in the break room. you gave that up in exchange for power. if you want a business AND the camaraderie, start a co-op

actually the UK prime minister has unilateral power to declare universal basic income at any point. the way this is done is by making every single citizen a member of the house of lords

We are consistently told certain ideas are the only possible correct ones, and deviating from that makes you insane. And yet these ideas are demonstrably bad, shitty, self serving pablum that result in bad outcomes whenever they are tried. Where is the echo chamber?
The reason that I have not changed my views is not because I haven't been exposed to the idea of difference, but because the people yelling at me have consistently shitehoused us into disaster upon calamity, from wars to crises to decades of austerity, and the world they have built sucks.

Another highlight from #PyConUK!

Katie Bickford gives a junior's perspective on doing difficult things. Contains advice for both junior developers *and* (importantly) the senior developers working with them! This is a topic that doesn't normally get enough airtime.

they believe that women are commodities and trans women are counterfeit women. it’s just pure misogyny. they do not think women are people, and plenty of feminists are fully on board with this logic
What it sounds like when philosophers who are also anti-trans activists submit an amicus brief to a US court where they argue for banning trans girls and women from women's sports.
