Landslides are the weather’s temporary victory over geology 😊 the mountains are of course rising faster than they are being eroded away at the moment. Eventually geology will relent, stop uplifting the mountains, and the weather will have its revenge.
The 110 always loses the war against those mountains

Underrated geologic battle: Santa Monica Mtns vs Los Angeles River. (Mountains are winning the battle… but they always lose the war.)

Also getting lucky with geography helps. Seattle is a way better harbor than Portland, true in the age of sail and true in the age of containerized freight. Explains why LA is the dominant west coast port today.
WA also industrialized way earlier and more thoroughly. Even 80 years ago WA was ahead thanks to Boeing.

It’s ok though. OR can still be the breadbasket of Cascadia.

It’s always easy to find retroactive reasons and no one likes answers like “blunder into having two of the largest tech companies in the world” but I do think there’s something to:
- flagship universities in your biggest cities
- state capitol not a cow town
- metro area not split by state lines

Clean energy as defined by wind and solar is cheaper but it is less reliable. A grid with natural gas is cheaper and more reliable precisely because it compliments wind and solar. Nuclear would obviously be cleaner reliable energy than natural gas but takes longer to build.
the astonishing thing about this wave of denialism is that we have more or less decidedly hit the point where clean energy is the *cheaper* option by some distance
I'm kind of baffled how the "moderates" have apparently all decided to turn against climate policy at once, just as China reaches green electrostate liftoff mode. I thought these people were all about National Greatness and making Hard Choices

Look all were asking for is for NWS to do detailed forecasts for 7 different mountain zones for the benefit of, like, 1000 people 😉
We desperately need a backcountry skier to start working at NWS Los Angeles. How far over 7500’!? Please tell me it’s like… 1’?

In 2018, then-Mayor Ada Colau called Barcelona’s new 30% inclusionary housing requirement for projects over 600m^2 a “paradigm shift,” making housing “a right and not a commodity.” It was supposed to produce 330 affordable units a year. The reality: just 31 affordable apartments in all these years.

The damage done by treating Trump's victory as some sweeping mandate in the first eight months of his term really was massive, but ending that collective delusion - i think with the help of last week's elections - really is having profound impacts.

Old JDM trucks would sell like crazy if it were easier to get parts or find mechanics willing to work on them.

They work very well and they're cheap.

It seems like a bad outcome that we don’t produce pickups that would be better for the environment and safety that there’s high demand for. My understanding is that as with housing it’s a regulatory failure.
People make me offers, in person or through notes on my windshield, to buy my truck all the time. Probably why my 1st Tacoma was stolen.

We dropped a new report re: train operations, everyone’s favorite topic. There’s some backstory that we will get too. But, the basic takeaway is modern train systems have moved away from two-person train ops. New York should, too! transitcosts.com/Train_Operat...
