LA Modern Architecture - Google My Maps
Proto-Modern/International Style/Modernist/Moderne/Postmodern etc etc

Realized I hadn’t posted this on Bluesky. I’m not an authoritative source but here is a map I created of modern architecture in the LA area (so far ~1,700 points from many sources). I’ve added perimeters for the current fires to get a sense of what might be impacted: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

I feel like I just found a gold nugget! During my daily streetview ambling I just now discovered a 1925 apartment building designed by RM Schindler that was thought to have been demolished for the 101 freeway. But it wasn’t! It was *moved.* (first screenshot is from US Modernist)

How had I never heard “Lord, Mr. Ford” by Jerry Reed until today? 50+ years old but all of it still hits hard today. Why is this #waroncars anthem not all over the place. Thx @synaptidae.bsky.social youtu.be/UVZEFZlLUzY?...

I think a lot about the chance we had at the start of COVID to finally become a more compassionate, collectivist nation, and how profoundly we were failed not only by the sociopathic greed of the ruling class but by each other.
It doesn’t mean we won’t get there, but the lost opportunity haunts me.

Remember how just a few years ago during the worst of the pandemic when we saw how the govt can actually do big things and saw that our collective health & well-being are intertwined, and then corporations got mad that they lost a modicum of power and helped fund a backlash of amnesia and fascism?

10+ years ago, pre-Trump, I would regularly get into conversations with purportedly well-meaning Dems about homelessness policy in LA. *Many* times I was asked “but why can’t we build the housing for them out in the desert?” I would respond “I guess there’s an old facility off 395 we could reopen.”
Under Trump, the draconian future of homelessness policy is coming into focus: mass internment. Utah is building a 16-acre site to detain up to 1,300 homeless people inside locked "accountability centers." This is profoundly alarming.

I’m a UCLA Planning school grad who was fortunate enough to get to work with Shoup on a few things.
Today it happened: my 7 yo asked me “why do you have to pay for parking? It’s just parking….”

México City really missed out on capitalizing on axolotl mania. I was in Santa Fe recently in a cute toy/gift shop that had a whole axolotl section. I’m told by my kids that it’s all about capybaras now… let’s hope the Amazon doesn’t miss this ripe opportunity.

Thanks to Hollywood films, Day of the Dead has evolved from a Mexican holiday to an international one celebrated by all of Los Angeles but long before that, the dead were already shaping L.A.’s story.

We haven’t even begun to reckon with what *facebook* has done to our society… I believe that we are headed for extremely bleak times unless we can figure out how to get ahead of the ball on this. But it seems like we’ve lost the collective will to get ahead of *anything* tbh.
This person is one hundred percent correct and it’s scary af. We will never “media literacy” our way out of this as a society. We are about to reap the whirlwind when it comes to misinformation, disinformation, and informational warfare.

It seems pretty clear to me that the only way we continue to keep people with “a Nazi streak” out for consideration on the Right is by maintaining zero tolerance for anything remotely Nazi on the Left.
