Realized I hadn’t posted this on Bluesky. I’m not an authoritative source but here is a map I created of modern architecture in the LA area (so far ~1,700 points from many sources). I’ve added perimeters for the current fires to get a sense of what might be impacted: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

the median voter wants no taxes & no debt but still healthcare & pensions, they want clean energy, clean water, cheap beef, & cheap gas, & they want a bruising take-no-prisoners military that embraces lesbians & furries & single moms without threatening anyone's masculinity

Everything ok babe? You haven’t even touched your piece of chicken, piece of broccoli, corn tortilla, and one other thing.

A thought that keeps me going: one of these days they’re going to try and open the ark and we all just have to remember to look away!

From time to time I will crack an old timer’s smile at a great Twitter yarn like this and then make the mistake of recounting it to my wife. “Why do you fall for this?! everything on the internet is a lie!”
When I was 23, I saw a bunch of really cute velvet furniture on the side of the road, totally nice. Took it in and a year later a friend’s new gf came to my house and it turns out I’d stolen her entire living room while she was moving.

In honor of Christmas, I’m showing my family the programmatic tamale-shaped restaurant building on Whittier from the late 20s when tamales were a popular fast food here.

My kids watched all of the Santa Buddies CGI dog-mouth movies (without ever watching Air Bud), and so now they are watching Space Buddies which is from 2009 but has a Soviet space dog that’s the same breed as Spuds Mackenzie named Spudnik.

I intuitively felt this to be true: the usage of “identity theft” looks to have fallen along with the rise of social media. I remember the 2000s when people were afraid of their identity getting stolen (and not just for credit cards). Now we just sign it all away with each Meta terms agreement.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Was just in K-town for kbbq for the first time in years (I eat less meat as I’ve aged). It’s a bummer to me that there’s still not a single pedestrian-focused block in our most housing- and restaurant-dense neighborhood. A pedestrianized or even CDMX-style wide-sidewalked 6th st would be incredible.

A very basic rule of thumb I realized I live by, as a white man navigating social spaces dominated by other white men:

✅ Happy groups of white men
❌ Angry groups of white men

On a flight a couple days ago, we let our two kids watch whatever they wanted on the screens. Our 4yo chose Barbie. She got so mad at Ken when he took over the house that she started yelling and punching the screen. We had to switch her movie for the sake of the person sitting in front of her.

Whelp, looks like we need to remake Quest for Fire (1981)
Scientists found the oldest evidence of human fire-making dating to 400,000 years ago, much earlier than previously thought.
Archaeologists Find Oldest Evidence of Fire-Making
Neanderthals 400,000 years ago were striking flints to make fires, researchers have found.

It's one of those films you know is incredibly profound when you see it for the first time, as I did as a kid. It only gets better with time.

i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

I’m on vacation in Mexico City staying in Polanquito and so of course all I’m thinking about is what changes you could make to an upper-income neighborhood in LA to make it this nice.
