(Since most people don’t know this, I just wanted to clarify that the Zorro stories take place in Spanish- and Mexican-era Los Angeles)

Haha right got it.

To ask them if they know? Or what are you thinking? I’m not sure what to do with this find except tell various Schindler websites etc.

Of course all the rental listings I can find show that it’s been completely gutted and just looks like a 1950s apartment.

But no need to imagine — it lives! 6 miles away.

I googled “5806 Carlton Way Schindler” and got the US Modernist page for Schindler which I have spent a lot of time on. I had definitely seen the old image from the start of this thread and lamented it being lost. The clean lines! The balconies. What it must have been like!

I looked up the address, 2045 S Sherbourne on Zillow. Year Built: 1925. Aha! Checks out. But the location was so odd. I looked up the building permits and found “building relocation” from 1949. Permit info said it was moved from 5806 Carlton Way, which is in Hollywood under the freeway.

It was very similar (though better than IMO) to another surviving (but little known) Schindler apartment building from 1922 in Boyle Heights.

The little semi-enclosed areas on the balconies was a dead giveaway. And then from above. And the plan view was like nothing else in LA:

But then I came across this. At first I was like hmm a 1980s international style-revival? It’s pretty all-in… but wait, where’s the garage? Why do those windows look so old? Why is the raised part of the facade so perfectly… and Immediately it hit me, wait this is a Schindler.

I was on streetview looking at cool dingbat facades in the apartment district in between Crestview and Reynier Village (some call La Cienega Heights?), and was on the 2000 block of S. Sherbourne. There are some great dingbats there!

This got an lol out of me:
“Well, now, all the cars placed end to end
Would reach to the moon and back again
And there'd probably be some poor fool who'd pull out to pass”
November 8, 2025 at 4:23 PM
“Well now I've got a car that's mine
Alone that me and the finance company own
A ready-made pile of manufactured grief
And if I ain't out of gas in the pouring
Rain I'm a-changing a flat in a hurricane
I once spent three days lost on a cloverleaf”

Yeah I’ve always loved it. You can also see the robot building from the freeway so it’s easy to be reminded of it
