It absolutely rules that The Train Guys have moved from "we should have more trains" to "if we want more trains we have to figure out how to build/operate them for less money" and we gotta apply this vibe to more things (housing, schools in some places, etc.)

this feels completely banal? yes, a big tent political party is going to include voters who have bigoted views. i don’t think anyone has argued otherwise? the actual question at hand is “to what extent should a political party ostensibly committed to equality appeal to popular prejudices?”

PBS News spoke to experts for a closer look at what the research says about the effect of government policies on birth rates — and whether increasing fertility rates is even a worthwhile goal.
What does it take to increase birth rates? Experts say there’s no 'magic' solution
As the Trump administration floats potential incentives to bring up the U.S. birth rate, experts tell PBS News that increasing a country’s birth rate is a heavy lift — if it’s possible at all.

Exactly this. If our court system remains at all functional, Rumeysa Ozturk will win an easy victory on First Amendment grounds… after having been locked up and suffered serious health consequences for two months. How many legal immigrants will be inclined to express opinions that risk such a “win”?
The chilling effect is worth so, so much more to them than actually winning.
