just a collection of "inevitable" multi-billion dollar tech that was going to be the future of everything until everyone in the audience who was supposed to just get on board said "lol no"

People say AI is a magic shortcut to creativity & success. I’ll tell you the real secret and it’s voraciously reading, being interested in everything, being diligent in the pursuit of learning, paying attention to the interior lives of others & keeping a heart open to the world.

AI has actively made life worse for literally everyone

- tech is now more expensive
- you cannot trust most media of reality anymore
- programs barely function
- energy prices
- literal psychosis
- your voice can be literally stolen for evil
- more spyware

but hey, you can avoid paying an artist.

More ideas. We’re not going to run out of ideas but generative AI is a tool for people who don’t want to be involved in the step between idea and art. People whose own ideas will never evolve or become more complex because they don’t actually want to interact with or examine them.

“What happened to <insert public intellectual>?” Oh they’re stupid. They’ve always been stupid, in the sense that the ideas they have are bad. They experience the world in a stupid way and draw stupid conclusions because they’re stupid. People just think they’re smart because they had a blog

A key thing about corporate use of genAI is that it removes all the friction involved between the executives' weird fetish shit and inner thoughts, and public display

It does to corporations what alcohol does to a bigot.
using AI cuts corners on involving people who know better. negativity for christmas is an awful ad concept even if it was made by people - so a creative team would push back on the request. business people like AI doesn't argue, not understanding experts were protecting them from their own bad ideas
"The most terrible time of the year"

McDonald’s pulls AI-generated Christmas advert in the Netherlands. The advert, titled "the most terrible time of the year," depicts Christmas chaos, with Santa caught in a traffic jam and a present-laden cyclist slipping in the snow

I know there's a lot of other massive problems with "AI," but as a techie and a PC builder I am GODDAMNED FUCKING SICK of some stupid hype bubble designed to fleece investors and nothing else ruining my hobby.

Your crypto shit took all the video cards. Your "AI" took GPUs *and* RAM.

Fuck you all.

It feels inescapable by design, and it does it by appealing to our most immature impulses. “I hate my chores, I hate my homework, and practicing at anything—trying at anything—is so difficult and boring.” And it works because Everyone Is Twelve.

Give a man a fish and someone with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about people getting free handouts. Teach a man to fish? Yeah, that person with a thousand fishes is going to bitch about that too.

And one other thing: we’re being told that AI is the only way to make games cheaper and faster, to pull us from this precipice of production nightmares the industry has found itself in. That it’s necessary.

We put out roughly 3 motherfucking games a year, not touching the stuff.
Skill issue.

It's a great article that people really should read.

The phrase "zombie storytelling" really does encapsulated a lot about superheroe media, and nostalgia.
I wrote a little bit about "Marvel Zombies" for @secondwindgroup.com.

In particular, how the series feels like a collection of the various undead ends of the post-"Endgame" MCU, threads and characters set as up as big deals, exiled from continuity.

Deskilling is real.

This is the world generative AI peddlers long for, one where people are incompetent without their service.

Don't outsource your brain to this shit. You'll regret it.

A book "not interesting you" is such a healthier metric. We don't only read to have a good time. Psychology and History are often deeply unsettling.

Does the book teach me anything? Does it challenge me in a meaningful way?

What makes me put a book down is if it gives me nothing.
Hey, as a librarian I have to tell you

You don't have to finish a book that doesn't interest you. Life's too short for that. Not your jam? You have my permission to move on to the next book.

ideas are fundamentally worthless. sorry. we give WAY too much credence to people who have them. yeah, even good ones, dude. the only thing I respect is execution. whether it's in myself or somebody else. an idea executed is worth something

"AI artists" thinking that someone "truly creative" shouldn't have to take the time to learn. They think their raw "talent" is enough, because they're the world's specialest boy and anything that doesn't come easily to them is bullshit. 🧵
