Are you even in higher education in the US if you haven’t gotten stuck in a classroom for an active shooter lockdown for several hours? I’m very glad to be safe and home.

IR is such a US-coded discipline that you have loads of analysts and journalists with IR backgrounds still churning out wordcount about what Trump will do with US hegemony even as the geopolitical reality looks more and more like this:

I was reading these to the tune of Mr. Bright side and couldn’t figure out why the last lines didn’t scan
He's facing arrest
In unusual style.
The Inspector is here;
He's going to trial:
Joseph K. is being slandered
He's using the Force
From the dark side
He's suddenly back
Even though he had died
Palpatine returned somehow

So much of "AI can help you learn!" makes me think of when I'd let students each bring a sheet of notes into the final examp and there'd be one group of students who would divide the work up and make one sheet. They'd always do poorly because making the sheet itself was the studying that mattered.

the answer to "why don't americans have..." and it's something so simple like national healthcare or feeding kids at school the answer is "bc Black people would also have it"
This is why America didn't get national health care back in the days of the Truman Administration, 1945-1953: white racists didn't want black Americans to get it.
After years of talking to Trump supporters my view of them has become very simple: They want socialist, even sometimes progressive reforms but they want them from someone who makes those reforms feel powerful and masculine and they want to make sure the people they don't like don't benefit from them

If he'll drive you to the criming, he's a Fed 👏👏

And you don't know much about him
If he'll drive you to the criming, he's a Fed 👏👏
after another long day of browsing old court documents, i just want to remind everyone that if a stranger agrees to do something illegal with you and they keep asking you to say out loud what the illegal plan is, that’s because the officer is recording you.

I once had a professor ask “Why is there a Business section in the newspaper but not a Labor section?” My classmates and I probably rolled our eyes, but damned if I haven’t remembered that question every few days for 30 years now.
The best way to understand the NYT is as a chronicle of power, which may explain why there are ** checks notes ** seven reporters on this single story about beefing up executive security

So if a NATO country invades another NATO country will the rest of NATO still come defend the attacked country? Asking for a friend. (Or I guess if we pull out of NATO first it's moot...)

Working in academic support but coming from faculty, it’s such a squeeze on both sides. I want to help my students advocate for grace when they face hardship, but I also know that the profs teaching a 5-5 are also exhausted and at full capacity.
So spot-on. And like…I *want* to support struggling students and offer them grace and flexibility, and always did even pre-pandemic, but the needs AND expectations for that have gone WAY up and as faculty, instead of support, we just get blamed and asked to do even more.

"Let's give Republicans the exact same level of respect and cooperation they gave Obama" is both my preferred response to "TRUMP IS YOUR PRESIDENT" and political advice I have been waiting for years for Dems to take.
During that first Obama Congress, we were constantly getting emails from angry Republicans imploring us to "JUST VOTE *NO* ON EVERYTHING FOR TWO YEARS AND WE MIGHT JUST SURVIVE THIS".

My boss was a Dem, so she didn't. But the GOPers did. And the midterm voters loved them for it.
Obama's '08 campaign won the biggest margin of victory in the last 30+ years. Within hours of his inauguration, Republicans went to dinner and agreed to oppose him on every single item. Two years later, they won 63 House seats and 6 Senate seats.

directing a reporter to your organization’s media team is standard practice at every company on earth, but when protestors do it it’s held out as a sign of something nefarious
Wow Peggy Noonan and Michael Powell both report that they went to Columbia and the protesters didn't want to talk to them, this definitely reveals something about somebody

One thing I’ve learned over the last few weeks is that a significant percentage of the country is still pro-shooters on the whole Kent State thing.
Today's the 54th anniversary of the Kent State Massacre.

Ohio Governor James Rhodes, the day before the massacre:

"They're worse than the Brownshirts, and the Communist element, and also the Night Riders, and the vigilantes. They're the worst type of people that we harbor in America."

The thing this has taught me is that the next time I go to a protest, I should bring a copy of my book because the police might hold it up on national TV. You can't buy that kind of advertisement for academic books.
