The daycare invasion attempts are even more of this. It’s not about parents rights, it’s about a belief that they are entitled to control children, even ones that aren’t theirs
The running theme between the Epstein story, banning trans healthcare for minors, religious homeschooling and the complaints about adult children estranging themselves is a fundamental American belief that children are property with no rights of their own
America is a culture of child abuse. Ask any survivor - we find one another, we form networks and communities.

The true scale of it would stagger and sicken you, and so it is buried, it is swept under the rug, it is denied and the survivors are silenced by whatever means are necessary.

The thing about being an educator working in PK-12 is you learn very quickly how little so many adults value and respect children. Even those whose job is to teach them. Children have agency. All adults - including parents and educators - should protect that.

This is a really good and condensed summary of when & why genAI/slopAI/LLM outputs etc should not be used in teaching. And it's by someone in CS/programming to anticipate the usual techblowhard anti-humanities responses.

extending lab leak to the spanish flu is fucking wild, tbh
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has stated that the 1918 flu pandemic was caused by a lab virus from vaccine research, a defective influenza vaccine. Let’s analyze what a lie this is. First, in 1918, 107 years ago, virology was in its infancy

How can you say Avatar has no cultural impact? I've been hearing that Na'vi Dad song nonstop for weeks
I think it's interesting that the Avatar films don't seem to have much of a life or cultural impact outside the theater but I also think it's extremely weird that such an observation is commonly met with the angriest sorts of responses

Bunraku (2010)

I have a weakness for movies that eschew realism in favor of a strong creative vision. True to its namesake, this is a samurai western that looks like it takes place in a stage production of a pop-up book, and I promise you've never seen another film quite like it.

I hate that I cannot enjoy the bewildered and angry fashion in which these tragic cis organisations tie themselves in knots attempting to rewrite reality because they’re tying *us* in knots, too.
We are currently in discussion with the NPCC about their policy of strip searches of transitioned women (in which we are treated as men because of the SC ruling).

I'm going to just share with you exactly how incoherent the NPCC are, underlining just ONE tiny aspect of their response.

Well, this is a run of Christmas-themed strips... ONE was bound to ditch the punchline for some heartfelt sentiment. It’s basically Christmas Special LAW.

Though this strip runs today, it’s set on Christmas Day. Hence, Rick’s indignation.

"An academic discovers a paper attributed to him that does not exist has been cited 42 times" is a sentence with an actual referent in 2025.
Closing out my year with a journal editor shocker 🧵

Checking new manuscripts today I reviewed a paper attributing 2 papers to me I did not write. A daft thing for an author to do of course. But intrigued I web searched up one of the titles and that's when it got real weird...

I know the proliferation of references to non-existent papers, powered by genAI, is getting less surprising and shocking but it doesn't make it any less potentially corrosive to the scholarly knowledge environment.

20,000 words, 150 footnotes, 100+ timeline events = our attempt at documenting and synthesizing all the ways that the federal government has attempted to destroy access to gender-affirming care since January unbreaking.org/issues/trans...
