Almost everyone "on the left" doesn't have a problem with machine learning, or technology, or progress. They do have problems with security, safety, mental health outcomes, plagiarism, labor distributions, and environmental & energy impact.

Industry regulation is not some unreasonable leftist ask.

the big lie we were raised with is that luddites hated all technology when they really just hated technology that was designed to put some of us out of work and make the rest work harder while the ruling class got to make extra profit off our backs

Given the environmental impact alone -- and what overbuilding and overcapacity could do to the economy when the bill for that truly comes due -- we'd be insane not to be extremely wary of AI, to the point of being up in arms about it. "AI" as a force is so much bigger than the tech itself.
