Can highly recommend:
• Premee Mohamed's Beneath the Rising trilogy (interdimensional apocalypse threatens, genius sociopath inventor & her bff try to solve, things go VERY sideways)
• Nordic visions (nice range of speculative stories: all very fun and often thoughtful)
Halloween may be over, but we're still feeling spooky!

Do you know I've got a poetry collection coming out next year? & you can preorder it? (Some links below, but you can preorder worldwide.)

Like tarot cards, witchy things, feminist rage (think Taylor's "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?" & Fleetwood's "Silver Springs."), & mythology? You're in luck.

When multiple supernova explosions and stellar winds combine, you get something super!

Below is a raku vase inspired by the Orion–Eridanus Superbubble, where smoke, flame, and drifting starlight meet on clay.

Technically, it's an aggravated felony sexual assault of a child, with harsher penalties put in place for perpetrators with younger victims.

Also, ACTUAL MEDIEVAL HISTORIAN HERE: For non-nobles, the average age of brides from the Black Death onwards was...22.2 years old.
I see the “technically it’s ephebophelia” crowd is out today, so just a reminder that A) this is NOT a case where technically correct is the best kind of correct and B) the minute you say this, the gods dump you in the “irredeemable creeper” basket and wash their hands thoroughly after touching you.

Holy shit, just learned about the typewriter art of Montserrat Alberich Escardívol, a Catalan typist. Using an extra wide typewriter and 180 color ribbons, she built up elaborate images from simple characters like 'm' and '.' and ';'. Here is her typewritten painting of the Cathedral of Barcelona.

Need a name for this looping/rerouting from physical space to digital and back again for something that could reside fully in one space.

Few years ago I visited an LA County library. Wi-fi access process: phone-internet application + physical Calif. ID -> physical library card -> wi-fi. 😂
today in We Live In The Future And The Future Is Stupid: went to a pub to inquire about a potential room booking but the staff aren't allowed to process those in person so I am now sitting in the pub, writing them an email to inquire about a potential room booking

Journalist friends, you know what to do.

Sarah Kendzior was suspended, she doesn’t know why, and the head of T&S said he won’t confirm whether or not the suspension was intentional unless media requests hit a threshold
We usually do that in response to media requests once they hit that threshold. I’ll try not to weigh in here, since that’s still details of an individual case. An interesting topic for a separate write up though, without discussing case specifics.

Carved in Stone is officially out!

In this comprehensive setting guide you'll be able to see, touch, taste, hear and smell your way through everything that modern-day scholars currently know of the enigmatic culture of the Picts, from the perspective of someone living in the late 7th Century.

I am calling upon the people of Ireland to immediately begin construction of a thread on this site about how you or someone you know was roasted for a fashion choice. We need it.

All roasts must have come from Irish people *only*. Please respect this important rule, it makes a difference.

Me inviting the Reddit bros to Harlan Ellison's house: hahaha, go to town; I look forward to whatever your 10¢ augury comes up with here.

(Bookshelves can be you & also your aspiration/curiosity, alternate or false self images, things you've lost/forgotten/can't let die. These guys can't just ask?)
New fear unlocked
There is a subreddit where people post pictures of bookshelves "bookshelf detective", and sometimes it's like "girl I'm dating, what do you think she is like"

And then the comments guess at what kind of person the owner of the bookshelf is and it feels ODDLY HUMILIATING LOL

He's wrong even about the semicolons 😂

When an inline list contains list items that have commas, you separate the list items with semicolons instead of commas. This is kind of the punctuation equivalent to the nesting logic you remember from highschool math (item [item {item} ] )
I think this one has got to him because he's posted at least three separate responses to this over the last 10 hours:

All day I've bn trying to recall/find a sci fi short story/novella involving a boy in(?)SoCal who journeys w/ a robot butler who has to give his heart as fee for the boy's passage. I was always bothered by the scene where heart washes up on beach, assumed operational. Still loved the story.

This is very good and you should read it, especially if you like your sci fi mingled with fairy tale, western, and horror. I'm still thinking about a few moments in this.
I've made @thomasha.bsky.social's original novelette "Uncertain Sons" - from his debut collection - available to read for those catching up on year-end reading, for awards eligibility and recommendations. Enjoy!

We appreciate your kind consideration.

This is what neighborhood free groups are for.

And if you do it unsolicited to individuals, the etiquette is to phrase it apologetically and in terms of your own perhaps somewhat unhealthy fixation on circumventing waste
One of these days we’re gonna have to establish a more explicit adult etiquette for offering people your old shit. Like yeah it was dope to be given a couch when I was 25. I’m 38 now. I don’t need shit anymore because when I do, I just buy it.

solution: ask artist to license existing artwork (that looks very similar in theme but WAY better) for one-time extremely limited use. Artist agrees. Artist gets paid, author gets non-AI, everybody is happy.

YES you can do this!!! See something you really like from an artist? Ask to license it!

We're disappointed to see Ben Barres's powerful book "The Autobiography of a Transgender Scientist" among the ~400 titles removed from the Naval Academy Library. Needless to say, we're proud to have published his book and will keep it — and his memory — alive.
