This whole thread but esp this
The notion that lonely terminally online people are a big part of our path towards fascism is what scares me about all of these institutions; governments, universities, etc; just digitizing everything and discounting human connection. We are social beings man, we need to interact with each other.

worth applying to politics as well. when you're criticizing an action people take "taking the better action next time" is only one of the alternatives people will consider, and worth remembering that "not bothering at all" is another.
I think about this a lot.

what anil said. also, two things are true:

1. america has a horrific, brutal facist and authoritarian tradition which has prepared for this moment;
2. that is not the only american tradition, and pretending it is helps the fascists.
Lots of folks want to have a gotcha, "did you know: America has always had corruption!" No shit. But did you know: a huge reason millions of people came to this country was because it was *better* at things like the rule of law and not being openly corrupt. For real. bsky.app/profile/anil...
sure, sure, I get that this is the "savvy" take. But no, actually, you didn't have the mayor of the largest city in the country openly bargaining away obvious crimes with the president of the United States in plain view of everyone.

Political violence is bad. It usually begets more political violence.

Celebrating political violence is bad. It usually encourages more political violence, against various targets.

Campus shootings are bad. They make everyone on campus less safe.

It's bad that what I wrote here is controversial.

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.

Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.

a thing I’ve noticed in my time in research: many people really want to believe that Data™ is some sort of magical object that contains objective truth

but the thing is, just like everything else, data is _produced_ via processes and mechanisms that profoundly affect the shape of the data
True story: Sometimes when people talk to me about “synthetic data” i just scream “WHERE DO THE BITS OF INFORMATION COME FROM” at them

This kind of thing makes me so proud to be Jewish.
BREAKING: Hundreds of Jews and allies have taken over Trump Tower chanting “We want justice, you say how. Bring Mahmoud home now!” and “Fight Nazis, not students.”

The civil disobedience is spawned by the ICE arrest of Palestinian student Mahmoud Khalil.

As far as I can tell, Khalil has still not been charged & his attorney/family still don’t know where he is.

Any Jew who thinks this is going to start and stop with a few Palestinian activists is fooling themselves. Our community should not be used as an excuse to upend democracy & the rule of law.

I do think that one kind of negative impact that quantitative social science has accidentally had is convincing some people that domain experience or qualitative knowledge is fake, because by using symbolic math as a tool of abstraction we’ve made some people think that it’s all that matters.

I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters.

i have written about this before but i have become extremely civic republican virtue pilled as a result of all of this. democracy will not work without an active effort to cultivate virtue among ordinary people!
trump is unique in that his depravity creates the very cynicism he feeds on. it is necessary to uphold the idea that we are capable of better even if that belief is counterfactual. which is why we need to tell the bureaucracy that their work is valued and that they are holding the line for us.
Taking the President's symbolic roles as essentially being the central rituals of American civic religion, Trump's inability to perform them- to actually be presidential- signals that the civic religion is hollow and without power, that there are no consequences for blaspheming it.

This, to me, is what's missing in most discussions of "disinformation" etc. these days. The idea that we will ever be able to train a society full of clear-eyed, courageous reasoners immune to propaganda is just silly. Better thinking, if we achieve it at all, is done socially, collectively.

Rewatching “Twin Peaks: The Return”, and it feels like a show about the collapse of any sense of connection or continuity in contemporary American life.

This is true even in the show’s structure: “Twin Peaks” is no longer an ensemble soap opera, but a collection of disconnected vignettes.
