11 years ago today, 12 year old Tamir Rice was gunned down by police officers on Cleveland’s west side.

The officer shot him within seconds of arriving at the park he was playing in.

Tamir’s life mattered. It still does. My thoughts are with his family today.

I’ll say it again: It was a huge mistake for Congress to abolish itself.

I don’t know what’s going on with my job yet but I’m an NIH funded scientist and I’ve been waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Here’s my LinkedIn. I’m a human geneticist and computational biologist. I very much want to stay in Seattle for family reasons. Please repost

BECAUSE WE HAVE A VACCINE. AND, UNTIL RECENTLY, ALMOST EVERYONE TOOK IT.

Remarkably, nowhere in the article does the word "vaccine" appear.

Americorps, a notoriously wasteful program /s
Hearing the same from a direct source. People in Americorps being told they're done. It's over. No notice.
My bff’s son works for Americorps and received a decommissioning letter today. DOGE is gutting the program. I’m so angry and disappointed DOGE would go after a program that does such good work. @marisakabas.bsky.social @kairyssdal.bsky.social @katiephang.bsky.social

“bullies” is one hell of a silly way to misspell “collaborator” or “spineless concessionist”.
Andrew Cuomo is resurgent, Gavin Newsom is podcasting, and Rahm Emanuel is considering a presidential run. Are these the bullies Democrats need? @galbeckerman.bsky.social asks. theatln.tc/BO6vnFaE

This👇 Calling these attacks “budget cuts” is like cutting off your leg and saying you’re trying to lose weight.
Really wish people would stop talking about the problem with Science under Trump as “budget cuts”.

No. Budgets are set deliberatively by elected members of congress. Budgets haven’t been cut.

What’s happening are *purges* and *censorship*.

If you have connections with universities, foundations, or other groups that might be interested in partnering reach out to @sciencewriters.org and @sciencewriting.bsky.social. We are committed to making this conference happen!
BREAKING: The University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University has reneged on their commitment to host the @sciencewriters.org annual conference and withdrew their entire financial support.

The National Association of Science Writers is now looking for a new venue, sponsors, and partners.

BREAKING: Trump says 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will start tomorrow.
March 3, 2025 at 8:38 PM
I swear he answered “tariffs” to every exam question after learning the word, bribed his way to graduating from Wharton, and as a result, now thinks he’s the world’s greatest economic genius.
Trump: "Tomorrow, tariffs -- 25 percent on Canada and 25 percent on Mexico. And that'll start."

This tweet from Elon Musk is, of course, false. The first known victim of DOGE died around February 2 after the refugee hospital that was giving her oxygen shut down.

But the tweet will be useful as there's abundant proof he's lying (or ill-informed) about Ebola & restarting payments.

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.
I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues

Firings are happening right now at the National Science Foundation. Essential staff are being cut.

This isn’t about the budget. If it was, they’d be going after the military (17%) or state appropriations (38%). NSF is 0.7% of the federal budget. All federal employees make up only 4% of the budget.

As digital privacy advocates have explained for years, every back door you create for yourself is a front door for an attacker.

There's no chance code cooked up in a week by Musk acolytes is secure. The question is when, not if, the Treasury will be compromised by hostiles beyond Musk himself.
This is a backdoor. Elon's coders are creating a backdoor into the US Treasury. This is incredibly dangerous both because of its intended use (by Elon and Trump) and the risk of other actors exploiting a major security vulnerability to cause a massive disruption to the US government.

This is a part of their “professors are the enemy” bullshit, but the cost of these freezes will extend well beyond them.

Their students working there, the patients in clinical trials, the businesses who supply these labs, and down the line regular people who reap the benefit will all feel it too.
Not just the National Institutes of Health, now the National Science Foundation is put on pause.
Reminder: research is a multi-step process. Pausing the peer review panels by itself creates months of delay.
I’m an NSF panel reviewer that was scheduled to meet today. Just got notice that all NSF panels were canceled today. I reviewed some innovative proposals in support of students. Devastating if these scholars don’t get to do this work. For the love of science & students I hope this is just a delay.💔

Rhode Island folks: please light up the lines to tell Whitehouse this is not what you voted for, and that Kennedy would be a terrible choice.
I will donate to anyone who primaries a Democrat voting to confirm RFK Jr. It’s so catastrophically dangerous that I’m sort of dumbfounded. As a scientist, this is as close as I’ve been to being a single issue voter.

If you agree, let @whitehouse.senate.gov know.
