So many new faces, I love it! If you weren’t following me on the other place, you can expect: cats, cocktails, travel photos, random science musings, things other people post that are funny or important, bouts of anger at the election outcome. Engaging in a new space can be scary but please do!

Epstein is the most garish and harrowing manifestation of this but oligarchy makes life miserable in a thousand other ways. A core point of democracy is that no one should have so much power that they can make themselves everybody's problem. We should have a political party that believes that
The Epstein emails should really end the debate over whether society should have billionaires. "Do you want there to be a class of people so powerful they can fuck your kids and no one will even try to do anything" seems like an easy sell if everyone in politics wasn't trying to get on their payroll

1. Iron journalist rule: some people are authentic and some people aren’t. Farmers? Authentic. College profs? Not. There are around 1.9 million farms in America, and 1.5 million college teachers. Farmers aren’t authentic because there’s more of them. It's because journalists love cliches.

No media outside of Kansas has picked up on the fact that the state just enacted a de facto public ban and papers-please act against trans people, and they won't, because trans people are only newsworthy if it furthers our dehumanization.
Kansas just passed a monstrous bill enabling criminal penalties and vigilante lawsuits for trans people using the bathroom according to their gender identity and requires them to surrender their current drivers licenses and birth certificates if it does not match their sex assigned at birth.

"When the emphasis is placed on attitude and adaptability, the burden of systemic failure is absorbed by individual workers."

This piece on the insidious normalization of an increasingly and intentionally broken NIH is so spot on it hurts.

What Happens When Science Is Asked to Pretend This Is Normal
In our All-Hands meetings before I left NIH, our leaders were always trying to think of ways to accommodate the new leadership, pitching ideas they thought would fit the “MAHA” agenda.

We have an unprecedented moment of solidarity between leftists, liberal, centrists, and even non-MAGA Republicans on opposing DHS and after like 3 days Dems completely folded their hand and are prepared to give ICE $10 billion more if they pinky promise to behave themselves
Chuck Schumer just announced demands on DHS to avoid shutdown:
1. End roving patrols, tighten rules on warrants
2. Enforce accountability & unified code of conduct for agents
3. No more masks & require bodycams

There are *already* standards on much of this.

The issue is DHS isn't following them!

Love that this post highlights a classic Neuro Monty Pyton theory of Andrew Huberman: “the head shape” theory

Congratulations to CBS for hiring their first neurocomedian
In response to announcement that he will be a new CBS contributor, Andrew Huberman tweeted “I’ve always gone issue-by-issue on health & science, spoken to experts w/a range of takes & presented where I see the center of (data) mass pointed. I’ll do the same with @CBSNews”. In Sept he posted this:

Very little if anything seems to have changed on the ground. ICE is still out there terrorizing neighborhoods and trying to disappear neighbors. None of us on the ground are buying this bullshit. We will keep organizing and fighting.
The intense fallout from the killing of Alex Pretti has forced President Trump to publicly change course in Minneapolis.

Listen to our White House reporters discuss the changes on today's episode of "The Daily."
Trump Changes Course in Minneapolis
The White House has been met with broad outcry over the killing of Alex Pretti, as well as pushback from Congress.

Another instance where lots of folks worked very hard for the smallest of changes and now we are all watching all progress from the past 20+ years reversed, like POOF
And the idea that this is what needs to be done to stay in science, find and work the good-ol'-boys network, kind of turns my stomach.

We stop talking about percentiles, paylines etc like it's the before times. Admin and leadership are still doing that because it still hasn't hit them yet. POs don't even know what the rules are anymore so grant reviews are just performative.

We're working back channels to get our grants funded.
Even people who score well (10th or even 5th %ile) are left without funding. Where do we go from here?

There are people with principled takes on the 2nd Amendment, like the 1st.

But if you ever believed that the American Right broadly supported 2nd Amendment rights, as opposed to rights for people who agreed with them, you are a fool.
Trump: "With that being said, you can't have guns. You can't walk in with guns. You just can't. You can't walk in with guns. You can't do that. But it's just a very unfortunate incident."

What I remember most vividly about the 2015 winter hellscape is that sometime around April the upper layers of the city's snowbanks started melting only to reveal all the detritus of the Pats' Superbowl parade at about the 3ft mark.
Do you know about the winter of 2014-2015 when Boston lost its mind from the snow?
