US President Trump timed the illegal attacks on Venezuela to coincide with the statutory deadline for his administration to explain the unlawful redactions made to the Epstein files, which it had partially and illegally released past the ordered dateline. #OpDeathEaters

Having my 1st pro audio book recorded right now-Null Witch-and tags are interesting. What I've noticed is that if the narrator doe a good job changing voices, tags are not as necessary. I think narration will evolve such that even when tags are there, a good narrator can leave them off occasionally.

It was because my work started being going into audio and using the "said" dialogue tag over and over becomes extremely noticeable when someone is speaking it. The dividing line for this is between Redshirts and Lock In. It was my choice and entirely intentional and I think makes for better books.
Now I'm curious. Mr. @scalzi.com was it a personal or editorial decision to rely less on dialog tags as you moved on to later work?

I compare Old Man's War to The Dispatcher and it is almost night and day comparatively speaking. I definitely prefer it, as well.

Hope you're awesome.

Y’all, Democracy Americana is a fantastic newsletter and really deserves your support (and is not Substack)
If you’ll indulge me for a second:

The newsletter has really struggled to attract new subscribers since I left Substack - while the monthly churn (existing subscribers canceling their subscription) has gone up significantly.

Not sure what the reasons are. But it is definitely concerning.
Sunday reading:

America is no longer a democracy. That doesn’t mean authoritarianism has won. There is reason to feel more optimistic now than last spring.

But the country needs a democratic transformation rather than merely a restoration of the pre-Trump status quo.

Random hot take: Mr. Bennett is every bit as frivolous and shallow as his wife, but all his failures are male-coded so we're culturally primed to like him while finding her silly.

There were plenty of leaks. But the recipients of the leaks opted not to publish.

And... Trump was president in 2017.
Bravo to President Trump’s administration. There were zero leaks about the operation in Venezuela. If this was 2017, it would have leaked days before.

Total professionalism from President Trump and his Cabinet.

People are afraid, angry, and determined, and they're looking for opportunities to speak out.

Organizing a "visibility" protest is as simple as choosing a safe, accessible public location and time, and letting people know.

If you announce it, they will come.

the administration wants to frame this (bizarrely) as law enforcement. but if law enforcement conducted a raid for a suspect and killed 40 people, including an unknown number of unarmed civilians, it would be treated as a clear disaster like Waco.

7. The Panamanian populace, who had elected Endara and rejected the Noriega dictatorship by almost 3-to-1, did not object.

8. Noriega fled to the Vatican’s embassy and the US did not violate its sanctity to arrest him (though we did troll them with Van Halen)

Ok let me tell you why legally Venezuela is not Panama

1. Panama declared war formally against the US prior to Operation Just Cause

2. US responded militarily to that declaration of war and seized Panama from the military government

3. Noriega fled into hiding rather than remain as head of state
