Tomorrow, January 6th, the sunrise in the Twin Cities will start getting earlier again (7:51 am)
This is where the voice of @naddington.bsky.social reminds me that sunrise will (in Minnesota) continue getting later for a could more weeks, and sunset has already been getting later, so no you're not insane (at least not for this reason) www.timeanddate.com/astronomy/eq...

Let us not forget to save some blame for people like Andy Luger and the Strib photo editors who have been trying for many years to paint all Somali-Minnesotans as terrorists, and everyone who let them get away with it

MPR News has identified at least 56 habeas corpus petitions filed in the state in December by immigrants who have been detained. The detainees who filed habeas petitions represent only a fraction, less than five percent of the total number of people confirmed arrested in the state. (11)

ICE didn't comment. And hasn't released a Minnesota arrest tally since mid-December: “There is a narrative that the focus is supposed to be public safety risks, then why is there such a lack of transparency?” Decker said. “Who is actually being detained and what is happening to them?” (10)

Some of the detainees identified by MPR News have been in the country for decades and are married to U.S. citizens. One even has a daughter serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. Despite claims by ICE that they target the "worst of the worst," many of the people detained have no criminal records. (3)

Court documents show that immigrants have been picked up at hardware stores, a gym, immigration hearings and during traffic stops, including one Somali woman who was arrested while picking up her sick child from school. That's different from past practices, where they picked people up in jails. (2)

I know it's a holiday eve. But we just dropped an @mprnews.org analysis of federal immigration habeas corpus petitions that gives a partial picture of the government’s approach/insight into the people being impacted in an increasingly opaque immigration system. (1) www.mprnews.org/story/2025/1...

I live in Minnesota. I’m not from here but chose it, in part because of the diversity, the supportive environment for kids and families, and the overall sense of community that makes those sides work well.

Now it’s all under attack by the federal government and the President of the United States.

I’ve experienced this firsthand. Armed with nothing but my voice & a whistle, I have scared them out of my neighborhood.

I’ve also scared a black bear while hiking the north shore. Same feeling afterwards. Why is this huge scary thing afraid of me?

I’m trying to put some thoughts together about ice agents in a way white Minnesotans can understand.

I’ve settled on black bears.

They’re like black bears. Big, scary, capable of immense violence.

But they are TERRIFIED by humans.

Clap your hands, whistle and they run away.

As the year draws to a close, I’m signing off 2025 with a magical find!

An ancient amber bear. Carved some 10,000 years ago, it washed up on a beach at Fanø, Denmark, from a submerged Mesolithic settlement in the North Sea.

✨ Happy New Year all! ✨

Incredible
Many observed The Minnesota* Star Tribune’s failure to distribute newspapers due to snowfall in Iowa on the first day it moved printing to that state with a sense of schadenfreude.

I want to be sure those people know that edition’s front page feature-photo headline was “Who's ready for Moore snow?”

I love this sequence of posts on my timeline:

1. A discussion of how Mamdani's appeal lies partly in his just being normal

2. A separate discussion of how everyday normal people—not "activists"—take care of their community.

Be normal. Help people. Normalize helping.

being a part of this has given me a lot of hope. But i object to the people involved being labeled “activists”. They’re just neighbors. “Activist” is only ever applied to leftists as a way to make them seem less normal. These people are normie AF.
