Now available to watch on Talking Pictures Encore, 'The Stone Tape' by Nigel Kneale, first broadcast on BBC 2 on Christmas Day 1972. Reassuringly still dark and terrifying in the manner only horror and supernatural drama tv from the early 70s could be.

The enemy is always aristocracy. It changes shape to fit whatever society we’re in, but the desire for it is endemic for certain types of people. You must learn to hate it as much as it hates you.

Cruelty is anhedonic. It rarely delivers the euphoria promised because, in the abstract, what feels righteous and joyful inevitably reveals itself to be sordid and small. Then it's "No not like that". "No not enough". "No the real battle, the forever war to make this feel good starts now". Forever.
Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

As an ex-Dubliner, this is an incredible and very accurate guide. One of the first things I missed when I emigrated was the sheer Christmas Craic in Dublin. It's definitely worth a weekend visit in December if you can afford it (just let the O'Pubes replace the markets)
This week, we've rounded up the best pubs in Dublin for Christmas decor and festivities - can also be used as a 'what to avoid' guide if it's not your jam, but we cover the spectrum from 'ah, that's nice' to 'massive crowds here' --

Seems more promising than "there was an em dash it must be fake!"

And yeah, I might not be able to remember every detail about the stuff I've written, owing to my moth-brained memory, but you risk me launching into a loving 6 hour presentation if you ask me questions about a scene or character.

never been more angry than when i was giving a guy at the end of the street where i lived at the time a mince pie and a fiver and someone actually stopped their car to shout at me not to give them any money because they'd just use it on drugs
this feels like another iteration of the "what if I give a homeless man money and he buys booze" thing. So then he bought booze, so what, you are not his personal life coach. You did your bit now go live your life.
Balancing "no person with a disability should be denied accommodations" with "it's important to discourage non-disabled people from pretending to be disabled to take advantage of these accommodations" is really difficult and I don't have a great answer for what anyone should do about it.

On top of the excellence of the cover, the story it advertises, “Dinobot Hunt,” was a great example of UK Transformers’ narrative sophistication: the bad guys manipulate the good guys without the latter ever realising it, even as they’re maimed and injured.
I’m not saying this is the greatest comic book cover of all time. But it’s up there.
