This. Even in cases where homophobia, transphobia and patriarchy in general are amplified (or imported) through colonialism, the function is not merely to “cause division” among colonized people, but to specifically give parts of the population a stake in the continuation of these structures.
there's a bizarre obsession with understanding the cause over applying a solution with this stuff. who gives a shit if the Euros made the poor victims of colonialism hate gay people? they currently do, and "make the country not have been colonized" isn't a serious position

I feel like discussions of "Death of the Author" in this context should mention that Barthes kicks off the essay by arguing that just because the author of a story views a "castrato" as a woman that doesn't mean the reader should necessarily support the character or author's perspective.
