After seeing how quickly Sim scoffed at and dismissed the 50 artists who showed up to ask the city not to abandon them a few months ago, its incredible to see the exponential increase in people who are prepared to show up.
Is Vancouver back?
This is an incredible marathon of posting on Bluesky from a City of Vancouver Councillor. He’s documenting an unofficial filibuster at City Hall as over 600 people have signed up to speak at the budget hearing. Over 200 have said their piece so far. Follow along.

218: owns a home, born in saint Paul’s. Grumbles when he gets tax bill but then realizes it’s what makes our beautiful city. Most concerned with cuts to sustainability department. Son asked once, will we drown when sea level rises. So I’ve dedicated life to climate solutions. Reconsider thus.

I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.
You Can't Report on Hunger While Taking Bread Off the Table

This a big deal: "China’s carbon dioxide emissions have been flat or falling for 18 months"

China's economy has grown by ~5% in the last year, so this comprehensively debunks the idea (again) that emissions are tied to growth. So yes, faster progress needed, but this is how you turn the corner.

My partner is a clown and this is exactly the core conversation that she and her peers are having all the time - about how to design situations for yourself to thread the needle on this paradox. (In her French clown school, they called this being at your most "beautiful")

I'm having a revelation.. I think treating evil game design, player-hostile design, quality of death, etc. as goals, while aligned with my values on a surface level, is kind of like when someone intentionally sets out to make a "bad" movie. It will not be as beautiful as the sincere "bad" movies.

whenever people around the game industry think this way about games i want them to just for a second try applying that thinking to any other context - like "this film is great because it followed the 180 degree rule in every scene". there's a reason we had this art movement thing called modernism
The conclusion I have to draw from playing videogames intermittently throughout my entire remembered life is that there is no mechanic or manner of handling it that will ensure your game is good. They should make another Seaman

I'm personally stoked about the Phantasy Star TTRPG so it was a treat to interview the creator himself about the process of squaring away the different eras of Phantasy Star and what the future might have in store (spoilers: its probably not adapting Episode III's battle system...)

Ken Sim has no mandate to make these brutal cuts.

ABC has no mandate to impose austerity.

The City's own Budget survey showed people overwhelmingly prefer tax rates that maintain public services.

We're fighting to stop these cuts and evict ABC.

I'll say it again: this gen AI plan is ludicrous and if they proceed, it will have immediate, catastrophic effects and hurt SE's reputation. If you work at SE and you're reading this, know I am 100 percent on your side and I will always defend your work from your bosses in public when you can't.

Because SE's QA people are probably not in a position to defend themselves and their jobs in public, I want to spell out some of what it is they specifically do for us localizers, because nothing I've written here is rhetorical. SE QA acts as a final check on our work after translation and editing.
You don't need me to tell you this is yet more good money being burned after bad. But as someone who's worked with that QA team, I'll say they're unsung heroes who truly play a huge role in maintaining SE's reputation for high quality locs and to attempt to replace them with AI is deeply insulting.
Square Enix wants 70% of its QA work to be handled by generative AI by the end of 2027, in partnership with the University of Tokyo's Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory. https://bit.ly/4qKdyQR

The writing has been on the wall, but to be quite frank, current SE leadership has shown utter disdain for its entire loc pipeline and if they can find a way to get rid of everyone in the chain, they will. If you care about quality prose in SE games, NOW is the time to let your feelings be known.
