I'm glad that I'm not the only one recognizing some parallels between modern tech and science and medicine in the early 20th century. A little less move fast and break things and a little more IRBs.

Do I think the Pope looks cool here? I do.

Do I think it would be cooler if he stood up for our trans brothers, sisters, and siblings and smacked around the American Bishops who voted to deny trans care in Catholic hospitals today? Yeah. I do. WAY fucking cooler.
What's from Chicago, hates Illinois Nazis, and is holy as fuck?

It's the Pope in 1982.

I have been telling people Larry Summers is a sleazeball since he was working in the Clinton White House. Maybe now they'll listen?

I’m at the annual paleontology conference. Here’s how people today have described their work:

“I basically study swamp monsters”
“I’m a dinosaur orthodontist”
“Dead bird bird watcher”

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

Last month, two of my favorite ballet dancers, from two different companies, doing completely different things at the time, had fractures to the same bone in the foot. It was the first injury for both of them. A strange, and unfortunate coincidence.

Fifty years ago right now, the Edmund Fitzgerald had left Superior, Wisconsin, gone through the ship canal, and was on the open lake. By 5PM, it had joined the Arthur M. Anderson, coming from Two Harbors.

I like this piece a lot about Rosalind Franklin’s role in solving the structure of DNA. It really respects her as a full scientist - what she saw, what she didn’t appreciate, what could have been if she’d had true peers to support her, or had not died so young.

What Rosalind Franklin truly contributed to the discovery of DNA’s structure
Franklin was no victim in how the DNA double helix was solved. An overlooked letter and an unpublished news article, both written in 1953, reveal that she was an equal player.

I spend a lot of time in theaters, and I don't like to turn my phone all the way off because I forget to turn it on again. So I flip the quiet button, put it on airplane mode, and turn off MY ALARMS! Yes! Alarms you have set do go off in quiet mode.
