Feeling that visceral moral contempt for this regime? That's not soul-damaging. It's soul-affirming. It takes a damaged soul not to feel that contempt.

More simply: before you get mad about something someone said, confirm that the thing you're mad about is the thing the person said
Feeling this again. So often there’s a social media post like “Person X said thing Y and I’m super pissed” and when you dig down they said Z, not Y, and Z wouldn’t have made me mad. But now that I’m already mad about Y, even if I acknowledge it wasn’t right, I’ve got to justify why Z is just as bad.
Side note: normalize admitting when you were wrong. Keeps you honest and helps keep you from getting too far out over your skis.

The best thing about America has never been what it is, but always what it aspires to be. The Nazis in power are trying to erase that aspiration and write in an aspiration towards hate and xenophobia. Saying “America has always been bad” does nothing but help them. Say “America should be better.”
of course much of the history of this country is full of white supremacist horror

but you don’t have to pretend otherwise to say we can and should be something else, you don’t have to hand it to the worst people alive

In 1982 someone tampered with Tylenol bottles in Chicago and every single bottle of Tylenol was immediately removed from the nation's shelves, during the Reagan presidency. Today, an AI bot coaches a kid into committing suicide and it's crickets. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago...

I guess technically this is subskeeting but it really isn't meant as a callout of the person who inspired it, just, that's what spurred me to make the post
There's a company that did a Very Bad Thing, the details of whinch aren't germane, but I decided to withdraw my custom. Someone I know on this here ELO site regularly posts about her use of the company's products and services

It occurs to me that the autopen is going to be mighty busy between when Trump shits himself to death and when the public finds out about it.

There's an Italian phrase that applies to this that has, conveniently, been in my bio here and on Twitter for a *while*
I think we need to figure out a system to evaluate and communicate when the post is such that we don't care if the video/whatever actually happened.

like, it doesn't matter if the hypothetical cat actually sat in the box or the cat exists. it is a cartoon to the viewer whether or not it's true

Yeah, I feel like the arguments for keeping it going were—increasingly—more abstract than the arguments for "caving"
fuck it, reactivating to retweet this
Imagine if Dems in the Senate hadn't caved. The House wouldn't be in session rn, the discharge petition wouldn't be signed, people wouldn't have SNAP, govt workers would be RIF'd & the GOP would have some decent talking points. But also online rage addicts would be happier! YMMV!

Audience culture is the worst it's ever been, I swear to god. People forgot how to act. I'm at the theater, trying to enjoy my show, which I've paid GOOD MONEY for, and these two old assholes are in the balcony heckling the life out of the poor bear onstage. Not letting him finish a single joke.

This was obviously a fine and perfectly defensible position at the time and it was genuinely shameful that some people here wanted to boost their own cred by arguing that Trump should have been allowed every tool to continue his crusade to drive Hunter Biden to suicide.
Have any news outlets that ran scathing front page headlines, op-eds and editorials about Biden pardoning Hunter admitted that they were wrong after we've seen Trump maliciously prosecute Comey, James, McIver etc?

Leave aside the AI thing, this highlights the problem with so much in the tech “solution” space: at best it’s like setting timers or turning up or down heat automatically or something, but like anything that requires physical manipulation, you’ve still gotta do that.
no it isn’t!!! fuck you!!!

Also certain classes of people could self-select into professions that were compatible with florid unmanaged ADHD, in jobs that essentially don't exist anymore.
I keep saying this but it’s at least very interesting that many doctors didn’t think ADHD persisted into adulthood until you couldn’t buy Ritalin over the counter anymore and most people stopped smoking.
yeah tbh I’d really rather be on ADHD meds and NOT have to develop a two pack a day cigarette habit as someone who’s never smoked before just to function

Prevalence rates are no guide as to whether a condition is 'real' or overdiagnosed. 1 in 8 men get diagnosed with prostate cancer. Incidence rates have risen 55% since 1990. We accept this is due to better awareness & screening, & people surviving other conditions, not a fad or medical overreach.

unfortunately, the people in my family who disagree with me about mamdani all agree with me about Trump, which means this picture is going to do nothing but make them say “see they ARE both antisemites” instead of the actual explanation, which is that Trump is easily swayed by whoever is in the room
November 21, 2025 at 9:34 PM
So I think we're going to be seeing a narrative develop that Mamdani rolled, based on the fact that Trump seemed pleased coupled with a certainty that Mamdani was going to roll. I don't know how much actual reality is going yo be able to shake that.

The basic problem here, as with T&S more broadly (from my outside perspective) is that most people are mostly decent, and assume other people are mostly decent, so they don't think about how to address people who are evil (or shitty) on purpose/as a terminal goal
There is a very good reason why internal policies are internal, and it's because griefers are VERY good at testing the boundaries of the system until they're confident they can be as abusive as they want and still remain one millimeter away from the point at which they will be removed.

I think with a lot of powerful men they see access to sex as their rightful due and that aren't all that embarrassed by that and for the longest time society as a whole wasn't either.

And yet even with that there are people who find a line to cross for the thrill of crossing it.

the musical "Hair" features the following list: "Sodomy, fellatio, cunnilingus, pederasty."

In context of the show it is a list of sex acts that the MAN doesn't want us to do but which are harmless.

In reality three of the four are that, and the fourth is CSA.

The sixties were bad actually
I want people to understand that in my youth, a youth that happened somewhere between the youth of Epstein, Trump, Maxwell, ex-Prince Andrew, et al & that of their victims, the term "jail bait" was framed as a compliment.
