This will make a big difference to families... as long as they're in an area with good usable public transport.
More services in middle and outer Melbourne, regional towns and further afield are needed to ensure that more people can benefit. www.abc.net.au/news/...
Children to get free public transport in Victoria from 2026
The Victorian government will make public transport free for all children from next year in a bid to relieve cost-of-living pressures.

We CT scanned thousands of vertebrates from US natural history collections and made them freely available. Countless people have used the data for research (>200 pubs) and to learn anatomy/morphology.

Just reposting this which I think is the most gorgeous thing I have seen in my career - a critically endangered orange-bellied parrot feeding on a carpet of daisies after an ecological burn. This was the first time they’d had the chance to feed naturally in 15y and was wonderful to witness

The extension of the Upfield path from Sages Road to the Ring Road path work is due to start in July. Keep in mind that since the state government first funded and promised this project in 2018, the date has shifted many times and the project scope has shrank considerably so 🤞🏼

Great map shown at a conference that I’m presenting at. We see the increase in restaurant spending along the path of the solar eclipse. I enjoy stumbling across fun maps in the wild.

‘No-brainer’: Commuters go loco for Tauranga to Auckland train

And I learned from this interesting discussion that the synchronous condenser thingamajig illustrated in the Wikipedia article is in Templestowe, Melbourne, and was built in 1966. Brings a little warm inner glow. (The illustrations, not the whosamawatchit.)
I learned from a @sammyroth.bsky.social story that CA has capacitors, but now I want to know if we have enough synchronous condensers

Classic photo.
Today's historic pic: This snap from my grandfather's collection shows South Australian Railways 4-8-4 streamlined 520 class steam loco no 524 and train in Ellen Street, Port Pirie, SA, 1950. Twelve broad gauge 520s were built in 1943-47 and they ran until the early 1960s. 524 was scrapped in 1969.
