You know he’s an idiot, I know he’s an idiot, we all know he’s an idiot

We all know everyone knows we all know he’s an idiot. And you all know exactly who I’m talking about.

It’s time to break the kayfabe
Surely, regardless of our politics, we can all agree it’s not good to have an idiot in power
I dislike parochialism. It's a reminder of the dark old days of insular Australia that we're thankfully out-growing.

But if we have to argue amongst ourselves, then at least "my train is better than your train" is something I could hand-wave

Sorry Melbourne, Sydney’s metro system beats your new CBD rail tunnel
Melburnians flocked to the opening of their $15 billion Metro Tunnel. We joined them for a ride to see how it compares to Sydney’s expanding metro network.

Today's opening of Melbourne #metrotunnel is a big day.

There are two major reasons this is a very happy day for me, and to explain one of those reasons, here's a re-post of a thread from a few weeks ago....
Melbourne #metrotunnel is special to me.
And with yesterday’s announcement, I want to now tell you why in a thread.
I love rail maps. Inspired by Beck’s London Underground diagram since a youngster, I've long thought every big city needs a map and an UndergrounD just like London (1/12)

Today's pic: NSW State Rail Authority Alco-engined diesel locomotive 4479 hauls the northbound Cooma Mail onto a wooden trestle bridge over Bumbalong Road and Colyers Creek near Colinton, NSW, early December 1984. The Cooma Mail last ran in 1986, and no trains have run here since 1989.

Melbourne Metro Tunnel opens today.

Take a look at the newly released update of my Melbourne Train and Tram Map on the Australian Rail Maps website. 😁

Decades ago, when I was a young railfan, I would simply have not believed you if you had told me that, in my lifetime, gunzels would be sought out for their political influence. And that legacy media would jealously bemoan it.

Good luck to them!
This makes me happy.

Instagram influencers used to promote Metro Tunnel

London's Elizabeth Line (Crossrail) and Melbourne's Metro Tunnel have a lot in common.
The Elizabeth Line is a roaring success. Key to this is quick frequent connections. Easy interchange will be equally important for Melbourne's Metro Tunnel and connecting suburban lines.

Today’s historic pic: Exactly 38 years ago today, L class tram 106 on trip from the Zoo, near Royal Park, Vic, November 29, 1987. This may be the luckiest shot I have ever taken as it would have been snapped from inside a moving Upfield train as we crossed over the tram line.

Strange story about Australia's first locally mass-manufactured car headed as 'our car'. But the details in the story make it clear it wasn't really, but was rather what the Yanks wanted to sell to us. History echoes to this day. We bought it though (hook, line and sinker).

There was a long long time when many many powerful people refused to stand up to Joe McCarthy. And then McCarthy got weak, and people found their spines.

People finding their spines is always good news, not least because it's a sign of Trump's weakness.
A top Republican in Indiana, whose daughter has Down Syndrome, just announced he will be voting to block Trump’s gerrymandering after Trump used the R-word to insult people yesterday.

I am so stoked about this. I could moan about some details, and how an enduring service must run multiple times a day, but simply having an operator prepared to run this in such a hostile car-centric environment is such a step up from having nothing for over two decades—I’m thrilled. We need this!

Well well well. I did not expect this.

New passenger train named 'The Mainlander' to link Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill in NZ'.

Very experimental just yet, limited travel dates and priced as an 'experience' rather than transport.

But, better than a poke in the eye with a burnt stick.

Today's historic pic: The station at Penrose, NSW, November 9 1985. Penrose is 171km from Sydney on the Southern Highlands line. Many trains run through non-stop but just 3-4 daily Goulburn trains stop here nowadays. The only buildings remaining today are the nearer two at right.

"Infinity Planet" sounds a bit like a fever dream. I'm not certain of the exact location they're talking about here, but being on the Bruce Highway, which is about 3km east of the railway station at Elimbah, this doesn't sound ideal for access and transport impacts.

Will this $2.6 billion theme park succeed where others have failed?
A mega theme park and entertainment precinct has been proposed for a rural township between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. But will this one happen?

Melbourne’s rail network will feel the improvements immediately, but experience from Sydney and elsewhere shows changes in travel behaviour will take time.

I did a #Railnatter episode today!

In honour of the impending opening of MetroTunnel, it's basically a beginner's guide to Melbourne's trains and trams in video format

A bit of brain-off stuff (that's my style).
Thanks, @garethdennis.uk for the opportunity!

Marion is in Adelaide's south-western suburbs, 11.4km from the city on the broad gauge suburban line to Noarlunga (since electrified and extended to Seaford).

Melbourne Metro Tunnel opens this coming Sunday (30/11). So today I have updated the Melbourne Train & Tram Map on the Australian Rail Maps website:

Sunbury and Pak/Cran lines run via MetroTunnel and also still via the City Loop until February.

Today's historic pic: 37 years ago today, SW5 class tram 789 on an East Coburg-bound route 1, turns from Sturt St into Nolan St, South Melbourne, November 26, 1988. Note the supplementary desto board. Highrises now fill the background, Nolan St is now Southbank Bvd, and route 1 still turns here.

A reminder that cars aren’t a technology problem. They’re a geometry problem.
Waymo privatized another public street:

Chanel approaching 4th, San Francisco

Possibly queued for a Billie Eilish show at Chase Center ~half mile away.

The light rail train on 4th seen passing in front of this roboherd has more passenger capacity than all of them combined.
