These things don't happen in isolation. It's no coincidence that Sydney Metro, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and Brisbane Cross River Rail all came along contemporaneously. Possibly also Auckland City Rail Link too. The fiscal and social conditions as well as zeitgeist of the time made them easier.

I don't know about that. I would expect though that they would have been speaking with each other on occasion to learn from each other.

To put this pic into context, here's another shot taken a year beforehand which shows that rail overbridge is not accessible by anything other than trains. So whilst I don't remember how I did it, that first pic must have been taken from a train. (Probably through an open window of a Hitachi EMU).
