"And so dynamite it was"

On this day 55 years ago, blubber went boom at the Oregon Coast.

That's when officials made the legendary decision to blow up a dead whale.

Here's a look back at the explosive piece of Oregon lore with a 2020 story by OPB's Tiffany Camhi written ahead of the whale of a tale's 50th anniversary.
‘It was like a blubber snowstorm’: Why Oregon blew up a whale in 1970
The exploding whale is a piece of Oregon lore that just won’t go away. It’s one of those real-life stories that just sounds too strange to be real.

Hundreds of thousands of federal workers have little more than 48 hours to explain what they accomplished over the last week.

Dear @nytimes.com, you don't *have* to publish obvious bullshit to claim you're being fair and balanced. You're supposed to report truth. And you have great reporters on staff who are all harmed when you publish blatant, obvious regime-driven propaganda bullshit

We got it right with outdoor dining spaces. Handing space back to cars is a serious urban regression.
Super awesome that a popular cafe across the street from the county's largest high school had to take down their curbside setup.

Two parked cars in its place.

Guys, you're still trying to replace Twitter. I'm telling you we can't do it.

Now what we might be able to do is recreate it. Recreate it in the aggregate.

Negril had one of the nicest outdoor dining setups in Brooklyn. It was designed by Rockwell Group. Today, thanks to our car-brained mayor and City Council, it's being torn down so it can become three or four parking spaces.

I don't post often on Substack, but today felt like a good day to write about my decision to cancel my @nytimes.com subscription. I'd been wanting to for a while, but the last straw was them publishing the "hey, you don't need to vote" nonsense. Enjoy!

Hochul "paused congestion pricing because it doesn’t poll well. It didn’t poll well before it was instituted in London or Stockholm, either, where it has been solving gridlock, increasing bus ridership and reducing asthma rates. Opinion shifted in those cities after residents saw the benefits."
What Made New York Great? Leadership. Where Is It Now?
The city was built on bold ideas. Suddenly Gov. Kathy Hochul paused a game-changing plan to fight congestion. Can we still do big things in a polarized moment?
