Heading back home to Pittsburgh after a relaxing three days in the Amish country of Ohio, during which at the end of an intense year, I succeeded in my goal of not once using my computer.

Soon back to the real world, and presumably a lot of complaints from our cats.

When I was on CNN's northeast desk, the first job at 6a every morning was to read the local papers. That guided some of what the massive CNN machine followed every day.

When those papers die, CNN doesn't hire new regional reporters. What you get instead is more panel shows, more punditry.
"The newspaper industry served as a feeder for our entire news media ecosystem. So when we lose those newspapers, we've lost that journalism. In the early 2000s, we had 40 journalists per 100,000 people. We're now down to 8 journalists per 100,000 people," says @victorpickard.bsky.social.

About 50 of Planned Parenthood’s nearly 600 clinics have shut down this year, largely because of Republican moves to cut the organization off from government money. As the closures mount, a different kind of organization is seeking to fill the void: anti-abortion pregnancy centers.
The Planned Parenthood Closed. A Christian Clinic Seized the Moment.
About 50 Planned Parenthoods have shut down this year, largely a result of efforts by President Trump and Republicans to target the organization.

Personally, I don’t think the writers needed to reintroduce the Jacob Wohl character.
GOP operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, convicted election fraudsters, were paid $960,000 in the second quarter to secure a pardon for a former nursing-home operator who defrauded the government of $38 million. Trump pardoned the man, Joseph Schwartz, last month.

Even some of the president’s closest advisers have been surprised by a number of the recent series of pardons.

I fully recognize that this movie is mediocre and I only watch it because I love Bill Nighy, but this scene hits the spot when we have a Republican in office.

Enjoyed a nice Christmas Eve dinner out with my husband.

The food was fine. The cocktails were divine.

We’re watching a bad Christmas movie in which someone — in all seriousness — used the phrase “pathological bedazzling.”

Outstanding.

Oh. This is deeply depressing & incredibly ugly about what it says you can get away with if you have the right elite private university on your academic business card. I thought we were done with this, on this issue, with Emily Oster. Sigh.
This is genuinely horrifying. Fact-free far-right agitprop given accolades by credible media across the political spectrum.
