I can’t be the only one who just straight up isn’t interested in incorporating anything we learn from synthetic “social” science experiments conducted on LLM facsimiles of human text because I simply don’t think the epistemology of it has any bearing on the world, regardless of any similarity
LLMs are now widely used in social science as stand-ins for humans—assuming they can produce realistic, human-like text

But... can they? We don’t actually know.

In our new study, we develop a Computational Turing Test.

And our findings are striking:
LLMs may be far less human-like than we think.🧵
Computational Turing Test Reveals Systematic Differences Between Human and AI Language
Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used in the social sciences to simulate human behavior, based on the assumption that they can generate realistic, human-like text. Yet this assumption rem...

When a chatbot gets something wrong, it’s not because it made an error. It’s because on that roll of the dice, it happened to string together a group of words that, when read by a human, represents something false. But it was working entirely as designed. It was supposed to make a sentence & it did.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I spent a delightful couple of hours with Henry Halfhead this week and can heartily recommend you do similar.

And if you figure out how to make toilet spaghetti, let me know.
There's nothing quite like Henry Halfhead, a possession puzzle sandbox where you can grow a tree, boil eggplant, and (allegedly) make toilet spaghetti

i'm not saying anything new but what's already happening is it's getting harder to trust information you can't verify because it's trivially easy to produce innumerable quantities of bullshit

it was already bad before this was possible; any unsigned/untraced information will be suspect

So-called #genAI means the abolition of the future through the proliferation of endless streams of stochastically rendered generic pasts. Having turned large parts of the cultural archive into training data, it now traps us in a foreverized pastness, a 24/7 nostalgia for a past that never existed
have just come across a YouTube account that has been using Sora to upload reels of fake, AI-generated “90s sitcoms” every few hours

Making up stories is literally what humans have done since we could talk to each other. It defines us. This, more than anything I've come across in the last few years, makes me feel like we're in the process of breaking something integral to our species.
the bedtime thing rips my heart in half. i would not have a fraction of the creativity i possess without my dad not only reading us books but literally making up stories on the spot every night. cannot express how lucky i was and how sad i am for children being raised by chatbots
Some parents are letting their kids talk to ChatGPT in the guise of characters. Some are using it to tell bedtime stories or create coloring books.

"My son thinks ChatGPT is the coolest train loving person in the world. The bar is set so high now I am never going to be able to compete with that.”
