I saw W Kamau Bell say on Subway Takes that every New Yorker should have to spent two weeks every year in the South, and honestly, no. Rural Southerners should spent two weeks in NYC. If they’re nice, they can do a week here and a week in some Ben and Jerry’s ass part of Vermont in the summer
We need to build some real social stigma around being afraid of cities. You don't have to like them or live there, but a politics built this strongly around watching TV and going "ewww" is embarrassing, and people should be embarrassed by it. It's like "fear of werewolves" being your top issue.

The craziest part is that Republicans could’ve ended the shutdown on their own anytime they wanted. 50 senators is all it would take.

We've gotten so many of these pieces where a liberal engages in a good-faith effort to understand Trump voters. Every time, they discover that there's no deeper sympathetic reason they hold their views. They're just misinformed and hateful. My own efforts have found this too.

When I was TAing for psych courses I always explained cognitive biases and defects in reasoning to the students by reminding them that human beings are emotional creatures capable of reason, not reasonable creatures capable of emotions, and those are very different creatures.
