Pledge of the woke patriot:

“I believe all people are created equal, and that we are stronger together than we are apart. Out of many parts we form one country, and I promise to protect the diversity of America or so help me God”
It’s fascinating to me the centuries long tradition of Europeans defining themselves in relation to their concept of China/“the orient”
Lots of notable bits in this piece from William Hague but mainly how the stuff we used to be told helped make nations strong - rule of law, strong democratic norms, low levels of corruption - now counts for nothing in the face of superior technology. I'm unconvinced

Europe risks going the way of imperial China
Once a proud power, Qing dynasty fell behind in technology to be exploited by the West — now the roles are reversing

I think the widespread prosperity of the American middle class has protected us from reckoning with destitution for the most part
Even in San Diego, a family making 136k a year isn’t exactly working class, much less living in poverty! There are many, many people making much less than that
I usually at least mildly understand where Stancil is coming from, but this is a wild take

$136k for a family of four would only just make ends meet in San Diego. Perhaps not “poverty” status but def not “saving money for emergencies and taking fun vacations” status, either

Incredible how many people just assume Brandon Johnson is a DSA member. If I were UWF and UWF was a serious organization I’d be a little offended

I’m so glad our bird brained media ask these dumb ass gotcha questions instead of more informative things
WELKER: “Do you think Trump’s a fascist?

MAYOR MAMDANI: “I’ve said it in the past. I say it today.”

WELKER: “How do you square working with someone who you still think is a threat to the democracy?”

MAYOR MAMDANI: “Working for the people of NYC demands you work with everyone.”

Chinese market socialism is demonstrating how USA can direct capital investment toward productive/innovative ends, if only we would stop caring about shareholder rights
It's funny when you think about how "productivity gains" physically just means "arranging the world to make things cheaper and easier to do" and we already got all the low-hanging fruit like "plant all your crops in monoculture rows" and "maintain your roads" so now capitalism has to kill itself

Some people are uncomfortable with the idea of representation as such and it would make more sense if they said so

I think we are discounting the possibility that MTG is leaving congress to start organizing her warband. There’s a “we have to save ourselves” tone which has got my spidey senses tingling

The US Government should own every acre of land and the states should administer its holdings for our benefit.
The issue isn't who gets representation, it's that once you start unwinding federalism, why stop at presidential elections? Why bother having "states" at all other than as national administrative boundaries?
And why keep the Senate at all? Why not just a giant House, proportionally elected?
Sorry, but this is nonsensical. Federalism isn't a binary. Elect the President by national popular vote and both the little and the big empty states STILL get overrepresented in the Senate, which, need I remind you, confirms judicial and other nominations.

Orestes Brownson wrote an incredible tract on this very question called “the American Republic” and not only does it exemplify the contradiction OP mentions but it also lays out a convincing case for a certain style of constitution!
They compromised, doing some of both. Which is incoherent!

And then we had a civil war that resolved the question of the nature of the Union, emphatically in favor of "nation"

But we didn't change the national election systems

IMO this is the "original sin" of the Second Republic

I have been saying we are in our warring kingdoms era of American politics
I would like to take you all back to the Warring States period of China.
I don't know what to make of the Mamdani-Trump summit so I'm just gonna sit with this for a moment

As investors pour billions and trillions into AI data infrastructure, American banks still operate on legacy systems which incorporate data files from all kinds of different systems

Yet another example where building a bridge to nowhere is more profitable than improving shitty roads
Like they took all the low hanging fruit on middleman apps with infinite scale. There's not really a whole lot of vital/daily/useful things you can do at this point with infinite scale. That nuts been cracked.

PSA: For Cook County residents: Your property taxes aren’t going up solely because your property value goes up.

Your property taxes are going up because the board of review is lowering commercial property values and those of your wealthy neighbors and putting their share of the taxes back on us.
Hard to do that when he overassessed my house by $160,000 what I bought it for that year and refused to budge.

Zohran Mamdani on Chi Ossé’s primary challenge to House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries:

“I think that right now is not the time to be engaging in that kind of a primary. I think the focus should be on delivering on this affordability agenda.”

Not just that but rail networks themselves are insidious feudal carve outs for a few rich barons and not even for public benefit. Rail lines suck and freight traffic makes commuter service worse.

Everything about our transportation system is bullshit that doesn’t work
but that last part did happen. imo it is particularly important to emphasize that the oil majors + big three did, in fact, directly reshape much of public transit in major cities and this included the literal dismemberment of public transit systems.

was it the only thing? no

did it happen? yes
Because a lot of leftists/progressives have pseudo conspiratorial models of reality where they think the only reason Americans live in suburbs is bc GM tore up the streetcar lines in LA etc.
