So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.
Trump’s Immigration Nightmare: It Is Happening Here
With astonishing speed, the administration has toppled the most cherished pillars of a free society. And the experts agree: It’s all going to get much, much worse.

BREAKING: We’re honored to represent the American Academy of Pediatrics after nearly $12 million of their federal public-health funding was cut in an attempt to retaliate against them for speaking out against the admin’s health policies.

We will stop this blatant abuse of power in court.

Because "disruptors" have typically never done ANYTHING. They re-invent the wheel; they lie and cheat, and make shit up, and we need to stop pretending that "disruption" is a net positive, or that "disruptors" are anything but grifters
On DOGE’s watch, federal spending did not go down at all. It went up. But is still led to cuts that closed offices, canceled programs and deprived people of food, medicine and other aid.

CECOT has a max capacity of 40,000.

There are over 50,000 Black men in solitary confinement in the US today.

Black men are most likely to be falsely arrested and charged while 100% innocent. You can be in jail for over a year before your trial. During that time you can be forced to do slave labor.

Worth revisiting this @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social piece in light of the Waymo meltdown over the weekend.

Automated vehicles ignore social contracts and are only beholden to their corporate bosses. Humans are much better equipped to deal with unforeseen situations, and to prioritize human values.
This articulates my exact feelings about San Francisco, the tech industry, & the entire social crisis of Capitalism we are all facing. Ms. Solnit writes with fierce precision & grace, connecting the dots with damning evidence rather than hyperbole.

Essential reading.
