But by night, a mild mannered permaculture wierdo who's asleep.
Firm believer that nearly any problem can be solved with paracord, biochar, well-facilitated discussion, and/or the fall of capitalism.

I don’t know the details of the Chomsky/Epstein relationship but there’s little question to me that it reeks of vanity and utterly unnecessary opportunism. Fuck that dude. But yes, he was once a good critic. Most good writers’ best ideas are better than they are.

Funny animal videos no longer being trustworthy just fucking sucks all around. I love the wonder of animal behavior and what it says about the experience of being alive. It's because it happened in reality that it's so fun. It's not fun if it was just made up. There's no wonder there.

One way that the reaction to Rob Reiner's murder mirrors Charlie Kirk's is that the best way to eulogize each of them is to quote their words, and in both cases, doing so pisses off conservatives.
Rob Reiner: “Silence in the face of authoritarianism is complicity. Speaking out is a patriotic act. Democracy doesn’t defend itself. It requires participation, vigilance, and courage from ordinary people."

Look, I know I'm not a billionaire with a cooked brain.

But if I was, I would not be naming my companies after LOTR.

I'd be naming them after Dune.

They all have Messiah complexes might as well embrace it.

I think part of What's Going On with billionaires is that the daily friction of interacting with normal people is part of what anchors people to the real world, and once you have enough money to buy your way out of the friction you can knock down a load-bearing column propping up your sanity.

When I talk to my students about law and resistance, I talk about how people tend to think in terms of whether they would’ve acted in 1942, but that they should instead ask themselves what they would’ve done in 1933.
“I think we have to be careful with the Nazi comparisons” people are always waiting until we are five minutes until the Holocaust and then they’re like well it’s only ethnic cleansing not a Holocaust
Is this clear enough or are we still doing that whole thing where we pretend it’s about “crime”?

as a grantwriter, the lack of unrestricted funding is a MASSIVE burden on nonprofits. everyone wants to fund a new shiny pilot program that makes them look like innovators. they don’t want to help make your tried and tested programs that have served the community for 50 years more sustainable
The headline I feel like is that all the philanthropic donations from billionaires typically have a shitload of restrictions.

Mackenzie is like “you’re doing work to stop something horrible or to help something good? Cool. Here’s a few hundred million.” and the paper is like “wow… so novel”
Mackenzie Scott’s signature philanthropic style is giving unrestricted gifts—a rarity in the industry. trib.al/DjrurgM

On @cancelmedaddy.bsky.social, we coined the term "Cancel Culture Grift Economy" to describe how this works.
Years ago, my colleagues at Business Insider and I tracked YouTuber “cancellation” arcs. What we found is that for many entertainers, “cancellation” actually sets the stage for a redemption arc, one that can raise their profile higher than ever. It wasn’t career-ending. It was fuel.

I've seen all sorts of instructions for how to turn off copilot on windows 11, but as an fyi, you can go into "add and remove programs" and just uninstall it. surprisingly, they let you do that. Does that remove every stupid ai thing? No idea, but in theory copilot is gone

Community isn’t something you show up to consume. It requires you to contribute, collaborate, and commit-create.

If you want community, you have to be community.

Archaeologist here. For 99.5% of human history (ca 300-400,000 years), we were peaceful (no war). There was conflict and smaller scale violence, but countless studies on the 119 known modern hunter gatherer groups show cooperation, negotiation, and peace instead of conflict. Please read books.
Revenge/physical combat was how people settled things for literally millions of years, it's normal human behavior, we're wolves not sheep, the government project trying to social engineer us and domesticate us into sheep has been unsuccessful

I don’t think I’d buy that robot

perhaps this is weird, but if i was filthy rich, i would do two things first (well, after paying off my student loans):
1) make sure every food bank in the country was permanently filled
2) buy every payday loan and cash cashing business and make them the lowest interest possible.

Bail out the people who are harmed, not the bad companies that caused the harm.
my hot AI take is that regardless of how we feel about it, bailing out the big AI companies may be *necessary* to avoid long-term systemic harm to real people

as always, the system acts too late to contain the blast radius
