Government overreach in labor relations in Canada inevitably produces a counter movement.

In law, SCC finally recognized constitutional rights to collective bargaining & strike (after denying these rights exist for decades) only after BC & Saskatchewan govts passed ridiculously restrictive laws.

@DalhousieU‬⁩ proposed arbitration to end its lockout of profs

⁦‪@dalfacultyassoc‬⁩ declined

But story points out that arb proposal was only for wages & union had to drop everything else.

Proposal is for show, so Dal can say “we offered arb but union is unreasonable”

Arbitration would have been conditional on the union abandoning any remaining non-wage proposals.

The worst thing the federal government has done to unions in my lifetime happened last night. The second worst thing was three weeks ago.

The labor movement will either protect ourselves right now or be smashed. That's all there is to it.

If the contract is ratified, grad workers will get a minimum stipend of $54,052, rising to $58,460 by 2026.

The union now votes on the contract, and could strike if they vote it down.
