Saturday when it was 70° I was out biking in shorts & short sleeves and rode by several people in puffy jackets, at least one with a scarf. 70°!!
Me, in a winter coat that could double as a sleeping bag, walking past two people in shorts.

Just after saying he'll veto any budget that makes cuts to the cops, who have repeatedly overspent the budget and cost the city over 1.5 billion in abuse lawsuits since 2000 (and twice the library budget this year alone).
Johnson tries to reframe the debate over the budget after suffering a very public defeat at the hands of the Finance Committee:

"It's working people or its the ultra rich. That's it."

Stop me if you've heard this one, but damn, I just recorded a banger of a pod. Everybody jabbers on about California and New York, but right in the middle of the country, Illinois—fossil-heavy, union-dense Illinois—is taking huge, courageous, progressive strides on energy.

As a less-vulnerable person, do something, anything, to either make these guys miserable or make a vulnerable person feel safer. Post a sign, carry a whistle, patronize immigrant businesses. Make it clear to ice/cbp at every moment that they are despised.
i think the synthesis so far of the LA/DC/Chicago experiences is:

1) vulnerable people should hide and wait it out to whatever extent they can
2) other people should help them do that, financially and otherwise
3) other people should also get loud
4) not violent though
Greg Bovino is leading a rebel cavalry terrorizing America—and it's important to recognize that it's in retreat. While the trauma and terror Bovino’s raiders instill is real and damaging, it’s remarkable to note how ineffective the force has turned out to be. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/trump-bord...

Pumpkin baked oats, they are good (and vegan, as written). I’d recommend adding some salt to the mix (or you can do a I did and add some smoked flaky salt when serving). flavorthemoments.com/overnight-pu...

Can PJM, the country's biggest energy market, require new data centers to submit to power cutoff during grid emergencies? Data center developers say no. But some lawmakers and consumer groups say it's the only sure way to curb skyrocketing energy costs:

Advocates say new data centers in the biggest U.S. power market should have to stop using electricity when demand peaks to help rein in costs. Tech…

Please stop using language that suggests that people with criminal records are appropriate targets for this administration's violence. One in three adults has a criminal record. Stop playing sacrifice games with fascists. Stop surrendering entire categories of people in your own mind.

I'm seeing people wonder why ICE is going after Charlotte.

ICE has been at war with Charlotte's sheriff ever since he won in 2018.

We'd covered this at Bolts back in the day; this quote is from that sheriff:
“When the 8 African American sheriffs took over the largest counties in North Carolina, it became a threat to the good ol’ boy system,” says the sheriff of Charlotte. These new sheriffs broke ties with ICE.

But GOP lawmakers cracked down this week, overbidding the governor’s veto to adopt this law:
North Carolina GOP Is Cracking Down on the Black Sheriffs Who Stood Up to ICE
Boosted by new supermajorities, Republicans are closing in on legislation to mandate more collaboration with ICE and preempt local policies hard-won by immigrants’ rights advocates.

If one subscribes to the theory that much of what the admin does is intended to push boundaries (in this case, literally) to test resistance and the law, suddenly Charlotte makes a lot more sense.
Charlotte is not even within the 100-mile “border zone” that CBP claims to have jurisdiction over.

the astonishing thing about this wave of denialism is that we have more or less decidedly hit the point where clean energy is the *cheaper* option by some distance
I'm kind of baffled how the "moderates" have apparently all decided to turn against climate policy at once, just as China reaches green electrostate liftoff mode. I thought these people were all about National Greatness and making Hard Choices

They arrested ~16 people with criminal records.

They terrorized thousands,
brutalized protesters,
destroyed families,
cratered businesses,
tear-gassed a Halloween parade,
traumatized kids in a day care,
killed a man,
& pepper sprayed a baby…

for 16 people with criminal records.

I’m really not sure what to do with this area as a cyclist. Like, I think I’m just going to have to take the lane? But I suspect traffic is going to get pretty backed up and they made the lanes pretty narrow so maybe it will be a lot of curb jumping? I’m so mad. www.chicago.gov/content/dam/...

All of DHS’s denials in this story about inhumane conditions and lack of access to attorneys are the same false claims they made about Broadview.

In Chicago, money to Greater Chicago Food Depository goes far. But donations based an asks of mutual aid in your neighborhood cover local needs more quickly.
Donate money to a food bank or food pantry, then give your extra cans and boxes to a mutual aid org, love fridge, free pantry, etc. in your neighborhood.

Money in formal channels takes advantage of scale, and whatever you can spare in informal channels reaches more neighbors.
spoke with the executive director of my local food bank today and got this really incredible line: "if you donate 1 can of green beans, we can give away 1 can of green beans. but if you donate a dollar, we can give away 6 cans of green beans"
