A critic (readers generally, but I'm thinking here of people who set out to analyze or otherwise discuss a work) can only see through the lens of their own context. That lens makes everything look like it fits (or doesn't) whatever pattern the critic is most familiar with.

I think the key thing this shows is that people in general do not like government shutdowns and so they generically approve of a deal which ends the shutdown, the details of which they do not generally know or care about, as much as those of us On Here hash them out.

This seems to be a common misconception. *There is nowhere to go* for most faculty & staff. The academic labor market is incredibly inflexible even in good times, we haven't been in good times for decades, and we're now in a *contracting* phase, not expanding. For most people, there's nowhere to go.

I think the Epstein story is how some people who have given Trump the pass or supported him previously are resolving the cognitive dissonance of why they don't like him now. Like, it's been obvious that Trump was implicated for awhile, but only with "proof" can some folks be like "Oh, he's bad."

When people tell you not to vote third party or leave the Dem party, the argument is (usually) not ideological but tactical. Anything you want to achieve is done much more easily by taking over your local dem party and organizing and voting in primaries to get your candidates than any other method.

As a teacher this is one of the things that drives me nuts. The science on phonics has been more than settled for 20 some years. The fact that cueing is still taught anywhere approaches criminal negligence.
ever since I learned about three-cueing I've developed infinitely more patience for replies on social media. mfers literally do not know how to read. people are walking around conjuring random meanings into words they don't know, and they don't know a lot of words. it's crazy

Actually, this is a huge theme in my History of Alternative Medicine class. When people feel ignored or exploited by mainstream medicine, they seek out alternative providers. In turn, many of those providers see 💰 in an untapped market. Especially if what they are providing isn't regulated.
Yeah, like I'm super happy that menopause is getting more attention. It's been so neglected and understudied for far too long. But, yeah, because of that, totally ripe for weird and exploitative ventures.
