This made me wonder about the etymology of quack.

“…short for quacksalver (1570s), from obsolete Dutch quacksalver (modern kwakzalver), literally ‘hawker of salve’”

Bill Oakley shared this sad news on Twitter, hadn’t seen it here yet: Dan McGrath has passed away.

A fantastic writer for SNL, Simpsons, Mission Hill (he wrote many fan’s favorite episode), King of the Hill, The PJs, and Gravity Falls. Any comedy nerd of the last 40 years knows so much of his work

Once again, if you abide Catholic dogma then the Pope is the divine instrument of God on Earth. Deny that and you deny the faith.

If instead you just like to use all the trappings of Catholicism to oppress and rob a nation, the Pope is a glaring impediment to your consolidation of power.
The U.S. bishops defended migrant families. Tom Homan snapped. Nan Hayworth called Pope Leo a “tool of our enemies.” Tim Burchett accused the church of getting rich off of sex trafficking.

Matt Walsh, Lara Logan, and the rest joined in. This is what MAGA anti-Catholicism looks like.
“Pope Leo Is a Tool of Our Enemies”: Homan Leads MAGA Attacks as Hayworth, Others Pile On
It’s the latest MAGA attack on Pope Leo’s pro-immigrant stance. Disgraced border chief Tom Homan — caught taking a $50,000 bribe in a Cava takeout bag — led the charge against Leo and the bishops.

If you scanned through the documents, they allude to a 5-year-old "woman"

(a rape victim with precocious puberty who gave birth at 5, who is called the "youngest woman" to give birth by the website they cite)

And not to get too real on a late night post, but yeah.

I am *so* fucking done with people acting like this is normal. That the president of our country can just flat out lie and it’s not a big deal. That an entire branch of our government has been subverted to the whims of a serial liar.
As someone who has had multiple MRIs, you absolutely know what the techs are imaging before they put you in the machine, because if there is any sort of metal in the target area you *really* need to let them know beforehand since cleaning bloodstains out of the tube is NOT a good time
Trump: I had an MRI and the result was outstanding.

Reporter: Was it your brain?

Trump: I have no idea what they analyzed, but whatever they analyzed, they analyzed it well.

Yeeeeeah Microsoft has been under the impression that they're the only game in town just because corporate inertia favored Office.

But you fucking push somebody and they're going to realize Office-style software is pretty straightforward to make and there are gobs of competitors in that space.
The International Criminal Court is ditching Microsoft Office, saying it’s too dependent on US tech, in favor of Open Desk, a German open source alternative.

The move comes after Microsoft revoked ICC head Karim Khan’s email access when he was sanctioned by the US for the warrant against Netanyahu.

Once again, this is the kind of policy the Soviet Union embraced when they were losing the Cold War.
Yikes. Banning people for activities such as co-authorship and advising a graduate student is completely unreasonable in a modern research environment. And a retroactive 5 year ban is wildly unfair.

I'd guess that 85-90% of American scientists would be ineligible for future funding under this law, maybe close to 100% in the R1 universities. So much for funding proposals based on scientific merit.

Apart from being sinophobes, the people pushing this have no clue how science or higher ed works.
“The prohibited activities would include joint research, co-authorship on papers, and advising a foreign graduate student or postdoctoral fellow. The language is retroactive, meaning any interactions during the previous 5 years could make a scientist ineligible for future federal funding.”
