OpenAI pirated large numbers of books and used them to train models.

OpenAI then deleted the dataset with the pirated books, and employees sent each other messages about doing so.

A lawsuit could now force the company to pay $150,000 per book, adding up to billions in damages.

This would be so sad if it wasn't malicious prosecution.
Border Patrol agent Lairmore testifies that he was not injured by the sandwich, but he felt the impact through his ballistic vest.

The sandwich came apart and "kind of exploded" on his chest upon impact, he says.

"I could smell the onions and mustard."

Re-upping this:
I know a lot of people are already spreading this info, but hoping to spread it a little further: donating to a food bank, food pantry, or food distribution mutual aid group is really important right now, as TFG and the fucking GOP are shutting down snap benefits on November 1. I'll link to a few

Ah, yes, the buses have arrived and my noisemakers are here and noise making. They're obviously well-rested from the time change ... noisy little noisemakers, and ima gonna have to go back and be mean.

This is one of my favorites by Michael Whelan. The detail and symbolism that go with the story is positively mind-blowing--like the story it illustrates.
THE SNOW QUEEN (1988)

Though the cover illustration by Leo and Diane Dillon on the first edition of The Snow Queen, by Joan D. Vinge, was excellent, Warner Books decided to commission me to do a new one. 1/5

A full-time job also makes these things more difficult, b/c going to cons means time off work. Likewise, full-time work doesn't leave a lot of bandwidth for creativity. But if I want nifty things like a home, health insurance, etc., full-time work it is.
Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

What did folks read in October that you loved?

My favorites were:
- Robert Jackson Bennett's fantasy mystery, The Tainted Cup: amazing worldbuilding/setting and I love Din
- Jamie Lackey's lovely fairytale novella, The Forest Gods, sequel to the wonderful The Forest God. (Yes, very similar title.)

We just released a new edition of M.Christian’s gay vampires with a twist novel RUNNING DRY! Totally biased, but think this is an exciting ride with unforgettable characters that does some cool things with the trope. And our cover artist loved “Sinners!” 🦇🖤
